I By Libby Demp Forrest I SCREAM^ YOU SCREAM, we all scream for ice cream. This is definitely the week to scream for ice cream — we're smack in the middle of Ice Cream Week. What better time to indulge one's self than right now? When we were growing up we had to go to the corner drug store to buy an ice cream cone on a hot, sultry summer night. But times have changed — and in this case, for the better. Thank goodness for the ample freezer in today's frig. * * * We're just about at the mid-summer mark. Plant seeds and fruits are ripening on every side. Towering sunflowers are much in evidence, the tallest things in our gardens. Bird song is declining now. Dawn comes a half hour later than it was at the summer solstice, just a few short weeks ago. And the points of sunrise and sunset are creeping slowly but surely southward each day. SUCH is summer and such is time. They go faster than we would have them. * * * We're into the peak tourist time. Ah, the streets are crowded; the beaches too. Finding a parking space can be a challenge. Those of us who are natives can always tell ourselves at least we don't have to travel long distances to enjoy a bit of time on the beach. We can enjoy the best of both worlds right where we are. When it comes to enjoying the best of this world, what better way than to eat

well at one of the local restaurants. Here are some we recommend: SPRINGER'S. While it's Ice Cream Week, (July is also Ice Cream Month, by the way), Springer's at 9420 Third Avenue, Stone Harbor is the place to go for the big scoop. A longtime ice cream parlor (nearly a half century old), Springer's has been a favorite spot even in this area rampant with ice cream places. There are more than 40 flavors to choose from - served to you any way you like - in shakes, sundaes, splits and sodas. Ice cream fans keep coming back to Springer's to try one combination after another. The ice cream is unbelievably delicious - rich, creamy and homemade. » # » MARABELLA'S. We're talking great Italian food when we say Marabella's located at 3rd Avenue and 95th Street in Stone Harbor. It's all the great Italian food, all the great Italian traditions, all the old world flavors rolled into one. While the Italian specialties are the drawing card (such as Baked Rigatoni Caruso), the seafood choices are well worth the trip as well. The Chicken Parmigiana is a favorite of ours, topped with homemade tomato sauce with mozzarella cheese. Excellent. * * * MULFORD'S CORBIN HOUSE. We always find an afternoon or evening's drive to Mulford's Corbin House on Route 50, Corbin City well worth the drive. The excellent food quality and friendly, personal service goes on year after year. The myriad bounties of the sea and land are offered in a pleasant, relaxing atmosphere. The Beef Bourguigonne, tender pieces of filet mignon sauteed in butter with mushrooms and onions, and

smothered in burgundy wine sauce is a special favorite of ours. There is also an ample selection of tender veal dishes that are a delight to the palate. DONNA'S PLACE. Come on over to Donna's Place at 107th & 3rd Avenue, Stone Harbor for a world of good eating in a mini-mall of food booths. Enjoy a snack, dessert or a full meal in a festive seashore atmosphere. Take Out is available from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. We always enjoy stopping by for some steamed "Littleneck" clams served with drawn butter or a hearty bowl of the delicious clam chowder. Seafood platters include Deviled Crab with steak potatoes, cole slaw and a peach half, and the Stuffed Shrimp (stuffed with crabmeat), also with steak potatoes, cole slaw and a peach half. Whipped cream for the ice cream and pastries is made daily from pure heavy cream. TRATTORIA. Open porch dining is the feature of Trattoria, located on Carpenter's Lane, Cape May. Italian accented cuisine, including fresh pasta and seafood, is the order of the day or evening in this very pleasant dining spot. The Sunday Brunch from 11 to 2 includes choices you are bound to enjoy. Our favorite is the freshly squeezed orange juice, a selection of homebaked breads and muffins, a melange of fresh fruit midori and the Seafood and Avocado Salad. It's a nice way to welcome a new week as well as the appetite.
