Empire Burlesque (Columbia) is a giant step forward for Bob Dylan. Unlike most performers who have reached middle age. Dylan isn't resting on past successes. The legendary folkrocker is still taking chances with his music, attempting R&B. using , female hacking vocalists, horn arrangements, and mixing the drums upfront for an 80s high-tech feel. Nevertheless, with all his experimentation, his nasal vocals, intense, fiery imagery. and folk chord structures will appease those who grew up with Dylan's music. In fact, the high point of Empire Burlesque just might be the stark (acoustic guitar/harmonica/vocal) "Dark Eyes." proving once again there are few things as powerful as Bob Dylan per-
forming solo, this is a wonderful record. SOUTHERN California's Rhino Records ( 1201 Olympic Blvd.. Santa Monica. CA. 90404) has the best catalog of 50s and 60s rock reissues and anyone who has an interest in this should write in this column, and. once again, they've knocked me out. Rhino has just acquired the rights to the long-out-of-print early albums by The Everly Brothers, making available hits such as "Bye Bye Love". "Wake Up Little Suzy", "When Will 1 Be Loved", and "Let It Be Me". TIIE FIRST three albums. Everly Brothers. The Fabulous Style Of The Everyly Brothers and Songs Our Daddy Taught Us are reissued in their original jackets, but it's what's inside, the bright, cheerful country-tinged rockers that are enhanced by Phil and Don's sparkling harmonies, that makes them essential purchases. Rhino also has a fourth Everly Brothers album that's mighty fine. too. All They Had To Do Was Drea m consists of unreleased tracks, different takes7 of hits, and studio chatter. Order all four. You won't be sorry. THOSE WHO like to listen to hot guitar soloing should give a listen to Steve Vai's Flex- Able Leftovers (Akashic. P.O. Box 69394, Los Angeles. CA. 90069" These two albums (the latter a 10-inch record) are chock full of exciting solos that often recall Frank Zappa in his Mothers Of Invention days. Vai's music is well arranged. using vibes, sitars, synthesizers, treated vocals, etc., and melodic, yet he's not timid about going over the edge with his playing. All in all. Steve Vai appears to be an artist worth keeping tabs on. British jazz-rock guitarist Allan Holdsworth has built a strong following thanks to his work with Gong. Soft Machine. UK. Rill Bruford. and his own bands His new album. Metal Fatigue (Enigma. P () Box 2428. El Segundo. CA 90245-1528) should please his fans, with Holdsworth in fine form, playing in his smooth, fluid styie I I
