Summer Youth Jobs Program Has Openings

Enrollment in the county's Summer Youth Employment Program i SYEP i has reached 278. SYEP. in its fourth week of a nine-week program, has funding for 350. 330, or 300 summer jobs, depending on who you ask when. Joseph Haggerty. Private Industry Council • PIC) administrator, originally said federal funds would pay for 350 summer jobs. Caren Maene. pic's principal planner, and Sam Stubbs, project coordinator, have since said that SYEP has funds for 300 workers. Maene added Monday, that the number will climb to 330 on Friday when a new plan takes effect. CAPE MAY COUNTY received $476,988 from the $1,394,988 that was allocated to the Atlantic/Cape Consortium SYEP. under the direction of PIC. has put youths to work in private nonprofit and public agencies throughout the county. "The special programs are the ones we really concentrate on so they are pretty full." said Stubbs. Woodbine Developmental Center, which provides work for many handicapped youths, requested 41 workers and received. 38 , he said. However, other sites remain unfilled. Wildwood Chamber of Commerce asked for 33 workers but

received only about 15. according to Stubbs. The City of North Wildwood requested 18 youth and have only two. THE COORDINATOR explained that in the Wildwoods many of the job offerings were for beach work. Because SYEP ranks job sites, the summer workers are directed toward more skilled jobs first, he said Stubbs also said the shortage of workers in those areas is due to boardwalk jobs that pay above the minimum wage. Joseph Haggerty. Private Industry Council administrator, said that area businesses are also haveing trouble finding summer help. "Look at the 'help wanted' signs when you drive around." he said. "The civilian community doesn't have it (enough help) so they're taking our kids." Terminations have occurred at some of the sites because of workers "not showing up etc. etc." said Haggertv. STUBBS SAID that due to the terminations and weekly additions, numbers of workers at the sites fluctuate. "There's a heavy attrition rate." he added. "The kids go for better paying jobs. Despite the open slots. SYEP has shown improvement over last year's ef-

fort. which had only 235 slots filled after the fourth week of the program. Applications for SYEP can be obtained from state Job Service offices in Wildwood and Ocean City. The deadline for applying is July 31. To qualify for the program. youths, aged 14-21. must be from families whose yearly wages fall below the Poverty level or the 70 percent Lower Living Standard, set by the federal government.
