outdoors with Lou Rodia No Salt Water Boat Operator's License

One of the things we do not need in the state of New Jersey is a boat operator's license for salt water A license is required for fresh water boat operation. As a result of this need, there has been some confusion in several instances when readers go to get their boat registrations renewed. Several have called to tell us that they were told that they must get an operator s license before they could get their boat registration renewed. This is not so. Anyone can renewany boat registration, fresh or salt water, without having an operator's license. In fact, it is possible to renew a registration for a JIVVWWWWWVVVWV

0 boat owner other than v yourself if the papers are s filled out properly and the t fees are paid ) IF VOl .ARE told by any 1 licensing agent that you must have an operator's i license before getting your boat registration renewed, you can refer the agent to the Public Information Office in Trenton at 609-292-5203. As for such a license in the future, nothing is imminent which would indicate that there is a concerted effort being made to establish one. That does not mean that it won't happen. We 'll be getting more information on the laws pertaining to boat operation in

i New Jersey and we'll pass this along as it reaches our desk. Meanwhile, don't be bulldozed into buying a license you do not need. A call to Gwen Hageman (609-652-7775) will get you the information you need. She'll also help get J-ou registered for the tournament. MARLIN Tournament: The 29th annual Cape May k County Marlin Tournament Q kicks off tomorrow (ThursL day) with a registration r dinner at the Yacht Club of p Stone Harbor Fishing in the offshore sports event is set for Friday and Saturday with an alternate day planned for Sunday if either of the two regular days are cancelled because of weather An estimated 50 boats are scheduled to fish the J release tournament It is ■ one of the oldest of its kind I on the East Coast., having I been started by a small group of dedicated marlin | fishing pioneers who had a common interest directed at promoting the sport They also decided that the tournament would be a chance to meet some of the other marlin fishermen in the area. Many knew each other only as ship-to-shore radio voices or as they passed on the way to and from the marlin grounds. THE FIRST tournament drew 14 boats and 11 fish were caught. The tournament grew steadily until it met the problem of a proliferation of tournaments up and down the coast. Many of the North Jersey boa Ls are now fishing tournaments, and several new tournaments are also scheduled in the Atlantic City to Cape May area. The tournaments give a real positive jolt to the local economy. They help promote the sport fishing potential of the area and the tournaments actually play a large part in the selling of those sleek, fast offshore fishing boats which are needed to search the offshore waters for billfish. The county tournament closes with an awards din-

ner at the Golden Eagle Hotel in Cape May. Tournament chairman Phil Robeson said several new entries this year indicate a rebirth in interest for this event. Prizes are limited to trophies and there is little of the pressure which surrounds come of the bigger tournaments which offer bigger prizes.
