loyride III ,4m By Libby Demp Forrest Lr JuT- 1 4 For years I've studied home remodeling magazines, planning in my mind the ultimate kitchen. I've seen pictures of kitchens where the fireplace was the focus of the room, and I've thought wouldn't that be nice someday in my kitchen. But then there is my practical side. Who would carry out the ashes from that fireplace? And who would carry in the logs? Who would split those logs? Then there were the kitchens that looked like they belonged inside a spaceship, all computerized and efficient. Sometimes when I walked into my own kitchen I've thought it would be nice to have a spaceship kitchen where everything was sterile and tidy. But then another side of me would ask. who would keep those cabinets all spic and span? Wouldn't cooking grease gum up the computer? And a woman who worked in that kitchen wouldn't look like me. She'd look like a robot. AFTER YEARS of planning and saving, my ultimate kitchen is finally underway. A new floor has been laid (Dark tiles to hide dirt). A Tiffany -type light fixture. (I bow to Victorian Cape May). New dark cabinets. (Again, to hide dirt). And then there is the matter of the wallpaper. I never thought of using wallpaper in the kitchen until I went by a wallpaper store one day and saw a sign in the window that said: "Wallpaper Sale." So wallpaper is what 1 bought The night after the first wall of the kitchen was papered. I couldn't sleep. I kept going down to stare at that wall during the night. The paper looked darker on the wall than it had looked on the roll. Of course, at three o'clock in the morning, everything looks dark. IT TOOK ME a couple of days to decide I had made the right decision after all. And then I had to wrestle with deciding what color to paint the remaining walls, the woodwork and the doors. I carried a wallpaper sample with me everywhere as I deliberated. Do I use one of the colors that is on the paper'' Do I mix the colors that are on the paper"' And. much as women ponder who are thinking about a change in hair color, I asked myself, do I want to go darker0 Or do I want to go lighter'.' In the meantime there was the matter of the oldfashioned. built-in cabinet that has been in the kitchen all these years. It was partially stripped, but the bottom part was covered with layers of paint NOW THE QUESTION was. do we paint it all. or do we strip it all? In the end that picture in my mind of an oldfashioned kitchen won and the cabinet was stripped while •the fumes nearly drove us out of the house We are in the homestretch now I'll be able to move back to the domestic front in a week or two New curtains will go up Then ail we'll need is someone who likes to cook.
