3 Towns Hit By Power Failures
By JACK SMYTH FLEASANTVILLE - Part of downtown Cape May was hit by a power failure early last Saturday Early Sunday, a power shortage dimmed lights and reduced the size of the pictures on any TV sets that might have been on in
Avalon and the northern part of Stone Harbor But both incidents were accidental in nature, and are unlikely to be repeated, a spokesperson for Atlantic Electric Co.. said on Monday. Four hundred and thirtyfour customers were without electricity in Cape May from 2.23 to 3.45 a.m., on Saturday. Heidi Heath Tony of Atlantic Electric said. •THE PROBLEM was with a feeder cable failing in a substation." Tony said. A crew worked all day in the hope of replacing the faulty cable before the peak power load period that occurs normally between 4 to 8 p.m.. Tony said. But when it became obvious that the repairs could not be completed in time, power was cut to 388 customers from 5.27 to 6.20 p.m. "We notified customers of the afternoon cut-off by radio in the hope that it would reduce demand, but unfortunately, that was not the case," said Tony. THE BROWNOtJT about 8 a.m. Sunday that affected about 1.550 customers in Avalon and the area of Stone Harbor north of 94th Street was caused by a transmission line that burned dowYi in Avalon. Tony said "It caused a line feeding a substation to short-out." said Tony. "Normally, the Battan Names Staff Counsel AVALON — Raymond A. Battan. Democratic candidate for 1st District Assemblyman (Cape MayCumberland). announced last week that he has named Margate attorney John Scott Abbott as his staff counsel. Abbott is a member the Atlantic County. New Jersey, and America bar associations, and has had his own practice for five years Abbott will join Battan's staff immediately, in addition to his own law practice duties
power load would have been shifted to another source, but for some reason, that didn't happen." The period of reduced power lasted about an hour, but the exact time is not known. Tony said. "No. we didn't get any calls from people with problems," Tony replied to a question. "Weekends are not that much of a problem because people are not working, and it doesn't affect customers as much," she said. The power failures are not heralds of things to come the balance of the season, Tony said. "They are not on-going problems, and we don't expect things like this to happen again," she said.
