By Libby Demp Forrest ■ AUGUST IS LOOMING. Today let's go I out and celebrate the July 24th. TomorI row let's go out and celebrate July 25th. I The day after tomorrow let's go out and I celebrate the 26th. And so on and so forth. • * • What can we tell you about August that I you don't already know? Did you know I the eighth month was named after I Augustus, the first Roman emperor, who I named the month after himself? Every I schoolboy and schoolgirl already knows I that August is going to rush by. Parents I know this is the month to start stockpiling I copy books and pencils and packages of I loose leaf paper. And then there are school clothes to I think about. My, haven't the little dears I suddenly sprung up this summer, and I don't fit into anything anymore. • * * WE CAN tell you one thing we always I look forward to in August — Jersey I tomatoes. We wait all year to get our fill I of this best of all fruit from the garden. H We eat tomatoes every meal of the day. I We snack on them. We cook with them. I We never get enough of them. Thank I goodness, they're low in calories to boot. » • • Most of our local restaurants enjoy usI ing Jersey tomatoes in their dishes. Of I course, the Ice cream parlors don't inI elude them on the menu. No one seems to I have come up with just the right tomato I ice cream yet. * * *
While you're dining out this week, you'll want to consider these recommended places : A&J BLUE CLAW. The famous Axelsson & Johnson family, identified with the sea lore of South Jersey, runs the A&J Blue Claw Restaurant on Ocean Drive, Cape May. The Maryland blue claw crabs are one of the great specialties that attract customers to the Blue Claw, natch. Anything you order in the seafood line is of course going to be excellent here. But landfarers won't be disappointed we can assure you. The broasted chicken, filet mignon and New York Cut sirloin are also delicious. Great chef, you know. * » * PEACHES. Everything is just super ginger peachy at (where else? ) ...Peaches a Cafe at 322 Carpenter's Lane in Cape May. Lunch is served Fri., Sat. and Sun. from 12 to 3, and dinner is served daily from 4:30 p.m. Some of the dishes we've tasted at Peaches and especially recommend are the Crab Cakes a La Peaches (backfin crabmeat served with a sweet and hot sauce on the side), grilled chicken wings (marinated and mesquite grilled, served with a light peanut sauce to dip), and the stuffed veal chop on the mesquite grille (stuffed with green pepper, scallions, pine nuts, bread crumbs, served with lemon and capers on a bed of rice). You'll find lots of pleasant surprises too. • » ♦ LA DOLCE VITA. New to Stone Harbor is La Dolce Vita, located at 9803 3rd Avenue, nearby the lagoon. Gourmet ice cream is the great feature here. What, you ask, is gourmet ice cream? Gelato is divine ice cream imported from Italy (remember it was Marco Polo who
gave the world so many taste sensations). This is the natural fruity ice cream eaten along the Rivera. If you think you've tried everything, we assure you Gelato ice cream is a totally different ice cream. We warn you tho - you'll be spoiled after trying the flavors at La Dolce Vita. PETER SHIELDS. Cape May is lavish with fine restaurants nowadays, and one of the most scenic is The Peter Shields at 1301 Beach Drive (at Trenton Avenue), located in a splendid turn-of-the-century mansion Sunday Buffet Brunch is served from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the surprisingly modest cost of $7.95. The piano bar makes for restful interludes as you enjoy your favorite beverages while enjoying the ocean views. Lunch is served 11:30 to 3, dinner from 4:30 until midnight. Menu choices include numerous seafood dishes, Italian specialties, steaks, prime ribs, even special foods for the children. * * * PILOT HOUSE. The Pilot House at 142 Decatur Street, Cape May offers a unique atmosphere whether you dine indoors or outdoors. Many diners in summertime enjoy the outdoor deck overlooking Carpenter's Lane. The Happy Hour Friday from 4 to 6 includes plentiful hors d'oeuvres. Lunch, dinner and late night snacks are served daily. A pleasant staff always awaits you and quickly attends to your order. The food is unfailingly excellent quality.
