Health Concerned About High Backbay Bacteria

STONE HARBOR - With "extremely high" fecal coliform bacteria counts in this borough's backbays, the county Health Department moved up its regular schedule to Monday to take more samples The state backbay water standard is 200 MPN ( Most Probable Number). Water sampled in Stone Harbor July 17 had readings of 1,600 at six sites and greater than 2,400 (the highest measurable) at two sites. Complete chart appears exclusively in this paper on page 71. The stock explanation for such readings is runoff from storm drains after rain storms. And there was indeed a rain storm the previous day. But. county Health Officer Louis J. Lamanna pointed out. Overboard Cat Sailor Rescued AVALON — Four Avalon Beach Patrol lifeboats and a Coast Guard cutter were used to rescue a man who fallen off his catamaran while sailing in the ocean off 43rd Street here July 14. According to Beach Patrol Lt. Brian Keyser, the rescue of Art Lembo of Marlton, constituted the first major rescue on Avalon beaches this year and kept lifeguards on duty until 6:15 p.m. KEYSER SAID Lembo, who owned the catamaran, fell off his boat when a wave hit it. His companion. Art Suaranta, who did not know how to sail, remained on the boat as it drifted onto the 30th Street beach. "The Coast Guard, which came from Townsends Inlet, actually spotted Lembo, who was wearing a lifejacket and drifting in swells that were four feet high," Keyser said. Lifeguards Bill Sieck and Mark Bender brought Lembo to the shore at 24th Street.
