The Masonic brothers at Hereford Lodge 177 will host a grand pancake breakfast Aug. 4 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Masonic Hall. 6300 Atlantic Ave. Plan to attend; You may buy your tickets at the door In the game of "oneupmanship" North Wildwood just pulled a coup over Six Flags over Georgia amusement park. The city now boasts 50 flags over the Boardwalk with the North Wildwood Tourism Commission purchasing a state flag from each state in the union. The flags will shortly be placed all along the Boardwalk in North Wildwood and the "dress-up" effect should be attractive. Good move. IN WILDWOOD Crest, the 75th Anniversary Diamond Jubilee is going along splendidly ! The next event in the long list of successful commemorative events scheduled is a tennis tournament scheduled for Saturday at the Wildwood Crest Tennis Courts at 6300 Atlantic Ave. The tournament, under the coordinative efforts of Dawn Connors, will consist of both men's and women's doubles. The first place team in each division will receive a cash prize and there will also be prizes and awards for the second and third place teams. There is a registration fee. Registration forms may be obtained at any of the Island's tennis courts Call Dawn for further info at 522-4898. IF YOU ARE contemplating purchasing a ticket for the one carat diamond to be raffled off Sept. 1, you'd better hurry! The raffle sponsored by the Diamond Jubilee Committee has drawn tremendous interest and chances soon will be scarce. The odds of winning are excellent, the cost per ticket is minimal, and the diamond is spectacular and valued at $2*500. Where else can you get a bargain like that? Also, the commemorative
plates are selling rapidly Another good deal! These specially crafted plates are priced by the committee at only $10.00 per plate. That is pennies over the actual cost and a bargain to all of you "memorabilia aficionados". Total casting for the plates was only 300 copies, so there is no doubt that they will become collector's items. I plan on buying two. which my boys will promptly break, thus increasing the possibility that the remaining 298 will appreciate in value! Jan Wooley, owner of the Palm Beach Motel, recently purchased two dozen of the plates. Sage investment? No doubt, but that is not why she bought them. Jan is giving the plates to each of two dozen "special" customers who patronize the Wooleys' fine establishment. Now that's a great idea ! It would be nice to see a few more of the plates put to such good use. If you are interested in purchasing a plate or two. you can buy them at : Crest Pharmacy. Brown's Jewelers. Sincerely Yours, Duffy's on the Lake, or at the Information Center at Rambler and the Beach. ACCORDING TO many state statutes, the cat is not recognized as a domestic animal. Hence the difficulty in establishing licensing ordinances, but the bets are on that in Wildwood, state statute or not. the purring felines will need a number. Oddly enough, the creatures don't seem to have crossed over Cresse Avenue as yet and North Wildwood officials are probably wishing they would travel north of 26th Street to visit the Anglesea area to assist in the little problem they are having around the bulkheads. It seems, however, that they are stationary and city officials will have to deal with the situation. If they could only wait until the off-season, they could capture them in "one fell swoop" under the Boardwalk Information Center.
For years, the cute little critters have always been able to find a free meal at the center, and without a doubt, they remember and will return as usual this Fall. UNTIL THEN. I guess contemplation of cat licenses and "Hav-a-Hart" traps will prevail. Oddly enough, licensing of cats has prrtfed to be a very sensitive issue in other communities. I can't imagine why. Councilman Ed Herman seems to be taking a constructive approach to the issue in stating that licensing will enable city officials to tell the good cats from the bad cats. That makes sense. I guess. Since cats have such a highly developed "homing" instinct, perhaps the straying felines could be traced back to the owner and the proper punishment levied against the owner. In Ancient Egypt, when a cat died, the owner was made to shave his eyebrows ajid mourning was not ended until the eybrows grew | back. Maybe the owners of 1 offending felines should be forced to shave their eyebrows as penance for causing an affront to the community. YOU WOULD either see very few cats waltzing about unattended or you would see a lot of housewives telling the cat inspector that the offending creature actually belongs to the "man of the house". I wish city council well on this one. Members have struggled for an eternity to pass an anti-grafitti ordinance and since cats have a gestation period of only 63 days, time is of the essence. If the "puddy-tat" ordinance takes as long, they will have an additional seven or eight generations of offspring to deal with. I'M SURE you have all heard about the new Wildwood Auto Mall along Park Boulevard. I am also sure that many of you have driven by in search of same. Disappointed because everything looks the same as it has for decades? Don't be The change is real; it just isn't apparent from the street. The Kindles and the Burkes have made a serious effort to corner the auto market in South Jersey and that's good for many assorted businesses on the Island While neither firm purchased the other, they have decided to cooperate, and join forces in inventory control and promotions. IN SHORT, they have each decided to compliment the other's operation rather than continuing to work in opposite directions That makes sense and as they gather momentum, we should witness a tremendous promotional effort Their efforts will certainly bring many people from surrounding areas into the Wildwoods and the various spin-offs should assist many. Will we now see a "Visit Realtors' Row" emerge from cooperative effort? Or J how about. "Put your cares ' to rest on Lawyer's Lane"? .
