Cage Loop Has Lively Opening

STONE HARBOR - The borough boys basketball leagues tipped off this past week with eight games. The Junior League boys played four games, three of which were decided by four points or less. The first game between the Explorers and Fightin' Irish ended up with the score 25-24 in favor of the Fightin' Irish. Tim Shannhan led all scorers with 16 points and teammate Bob Corey tossed in 14 to lead 1 the Irish. F.P. Dailey and Eric 1 Deluiscio led the Explorers with 12 points each. THE GAME between the Quakers and Hoyas went | the way of the Hoyas by a | score of 26-23. M. James | had a game-high 16 points <

while Ted Gladue led the Quakers with 10 points. The Quakers ran into more trouble against the Fightin' Irish, getting trampled 40-27. Corey led the Irish with 14 points and Shannhan had 13 points for the win. The last game in the Junior League this past week was between the Hoyas and Explorers The Hoyas won a squeeker in double overtime 31-27 The deciding factor was Mike Jones' 7 points in the two overtime periods to defeat the Explorers. THE SENIOR League presented plenty of high flying action with two teams jumping out to 2-0 starts. The Sixers had no

trouble defeating the Lakers and the Celtics. Against the Lakers, Rich Murphy scored 18 points, while playing the flawless floor leader. The other game against the Celtics turned into a bout, ending up 65-32, as Sean Sweeney popped in 18 points. The Nuggets had a little tougher time, bm still ended up 2-0. Dan Devris led the Nuggets in both games, followed by Patrick Bas- - tian. The first game against the Celtics ended 58-47 as Devris threw in 19 points and Bastian had 14 points. The second game against the Lakers saw Devris score 18 points and Bastian 16 to lead the Nug^ i gets 57-45. <

Clinic Slated AVALON - The Recreation Department will be offering the Les Burke Summer Basketball Clinic this summer. The clinics will be held daily noon - 3 p.m. in the air-conditioned Avalon Community Hall. August 5 - 9 is for boys 9-18. August 12 16 is for girls 9-18. Les Burke, the former head basketball coach at Spring Garden College, compiled a 148-74 record in 10 winning seasons. He has just completed his fourth consecutive winning season at LaSalle whereas teams have compiled a 50-14 record in the Catholic League North Division. Cape Radiology Moves Up Ladder

CAPE MAY - Cape Radiology won 3 of 4 games this past week to move into playoff contention in City Men's American League Softball. In its 22-11 defeat of Cape May Coasties, Radiologywas led by Wayne Ploucher. who had 6 RBI's. including a 3- run home run. Steve Weems and DickWallacehouser each had 2 doubles and 3 RBI's The Radiology team defeated the U.S.C.G. EECEN 12-6 as Ploucher had another 3-run home run. Winning pitcher Wallacehouser had a 3-run triple and Mark Cassidy contributed with some great defensive plays in certterfield. CAPE Radiology went on to defeat T.M.U. 14-6 as Ed Ahr and Steve Weems had 3 hits and 3 RBI's. Ploucher chipped in with a triple and 3 RBI's Kindle Ford defeated Eckel's Diesel 8-5 as Mitch Hand had 3 hits while Dave Hand and Harry Back had 2 hits apiece. The U.S.C.G.
