Soccer On Top

STONE HARBOR - The borough soccer league continued last week despite the bad weather. The Green Hornets improved their record to 3 wins and no losses for first place. The Hornets beat the Maroon Mariners 5-1 with 2 goals each from Joe Sparta and Brian James. In the Hornets' other game they defeated the Blue Wave 4-1 . The team was sparked by Laurie Kasper and Michael James, who each scored goals. In another big game the Gold Diggers defeated the Maroon Mariners in an action-packed game. The

Mariners took a 1-0 lead with five minutes left in the first half as Chris Rice scored on a breakaway. ABOUT FIVE minutes into the second half Shawn McCormack scored his first goal of the game to tie the score 1-1. With only 4 minutes left the Gold Diggers had a flurry of shots that goaltender Jon Errica saved until McCormack scored his second goal off a rebound to give the Diggers a 2-1 victory. Games are played Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 4:30 and 5:30 p.m. at the 82nd Street field.

Lifeguard Tournament

WILDWOOD - Marine National Bank, which recently opened five offices in Ocean County, will sponsor the sixth annual Ortley Beach Lifeguard Tournament, announced Philip W Koebig III, president and chief executive officer.

The eight-event tournament gets underway 6 p.m. Monday, July 29, on the beach at Fourth Avenue. Teams have been invited from shore communities in Ocean. Atlantic, Cape May and Monmouth Counties.

AVALON - Winners in the bike races conducted by the recreation department July 13 over a onemile course on Avalon Avenue have been announced. Fishing Test By Wetlands STONE HARBOR - The Wetlands Institute of Stone Harbor will sponsor its first annual Fun Fishing Contest for families and kids on Thursday, 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. tomorrow. Registration begins at 10 a.m. After registration, participants will go to their favorite fishing holes to land the big ones. All entries must be brought back to the Wetlands Institute by 2:30 p.m. Lemonade and cookies will be served under the umbrella on the lawn in front of the Institute during the judging and prizes will be awarded at 3:30 p.m.

Aces Get Slim Margin

STONE HARBOR - The second week of the season in the Lion's Club Little League has been completed. with the Aces moving into a half-game lead over the Eagles and Wildcats. The Aces took sole possession of first place Monday, routing the Panthers 12-7. Charles Bastian led the attack by roping three doubles and knocking in four runs for the winners. David Reagan turned in a fine defensive effort in a losing cause. THE ACES tried to stretch their lead but faced a fine pitching performance by Joe Henry for the Wildcats " and dropped a surprising 10-6 decision. Lee Russel smacked a home run and Jimmy Rowe added an RBI double and stole home in the Cats' upset victory. The Eagles were looking for their first win Thursday as they took on the Panthers. With the help of numerous walks issued by Panthers pitching and the 4 for 5 hitting of winning pitcher Risky Pomfret, the Eagles cruised to their first victory, 20-8. The game was decided early as the Eagles stretched their lead

as high as 20-3 before a late Panther rally closed the scoring gap. Anyone interested in joining the baseball league may do so at the field on 80th Street and Second Avenue Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 9 a.m.

Crabbing Derby Set Aug. 3-10 s Cuba Specialty, a Fillmore, N.Y. -based manufacturer of fishing tackle, is sponsoring the first annual Crab-Napper Derby. Aug. 3-10. along the New Jersey Shore. Each participating dealer will award prizes to the entrants who catch the biggest crabs measured point to point. The contest cutoff time is noon, Aug. 10.
