Ringered East Edges West in Tough Clash

By GEORGE FEISE AVALON — The annual East-West softball game sponsored by the Avalon Chamber of Commerce was played on Sunday. July 21, at Avalon's recreation field. It was evident from the warm-ups that an exciting game was in store between these two rival teams. The suspense mounted as the managers. Miriam Kauterman for the East and Rich Kurian for the West, readied their teams. A highlight of the pregame festivities was the arrival of a West player, Bob Sheston, fully dressed in a Phillies uniform. All in attendance knew immediately the seriousness of the competitive spirit that was to be displayed between these two teams. THE FIRST three or four innings were not indicative of the final score, as West crept ahead by 11 or 12 runs. As bats swooshed, and gloves flashed, the East settled down and began to turn the tide. Although there were some suspicions that the East had brought in a couAvalon Run Saturday AVALON — A five-mile run sponsored by the borough recreation department will be staged here Saturday, beginning 8 a.m. at the Avalon Community Hall, 30th and Avalon Avenue. Three will also be a onemile fun run. Trophies will be awarded for first, second. and third in six age categories for men and five for women. THE EIGHTH Annual Avalon Run for Life, sponsored by the borough and the New Avalon Run for Life, Committee, will be held 8:30 a.m. Saturday. Sept. 7. Preregistration can be accomplished any time before race day at the Avalon Sporting Goods Store, 26th and Dune Drive, or Community Hall. Packet pickup and preregistration will also be available at Avalon Sporting Goods 10 a.m. -5 p.m. Sept. 6. For information, call 967-3066.

West had its chance to go ahead in the 7th inning and made a valiant effort, but fell short by one run. leaving the final score: East 17. West 16. Surfers Pile Up Points AVALON — The second week of the Recreation Summer Surfing contest saw 20 participants in surfboard. boogie board and kneeboard competition. This event is for an accumulation of points toward final placings in the end of August. Anyone interested in competing can register Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at 30th Street and the beach.
