I Ocean Waters Also Checked by EPA

By BECKY BERNSTEIN Cape May County ocean waters have looked pretty good for the past few years. Barring a few high bacteria counts after thunderstorms, that is. according to Dr. Roland Hemmett, chief of the surveilance section of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in Edison. The EPA program, which runs from May 15 to Oct. 15. tests more than 130 points on the Atlantic Coast. Ten Cape May County shore points are checked bi-monthly for bacteria or fecal coiiform counts The county Health Department tests weekly for fecal coiiform in 43 i ocean and 92 backbay sites in its monitoring program | that began May 27 and runs I through Labor Day. I HEMMETT SAII) the I EPA effort, which utilizes a | former Navy gunboat, a 65Ifoot vessel for near shore work, and a helicopter to I get the samples, is pro5 bably one of the most inI tense in the country. All I Cape May County measurements are taken I by helicopter. 100 yards off ■ the shore. I The program extends I from Long island to Cape May Point and costs $.5 I million to operate, according to Hemmett. From I Strathmere north, the sites I are measured for dissolved oxygen, salt, nutrients. Iorganics. heavy metals, temperature, and pathogen I and virus levels, in addition J to bacteria counts Some of I those sites are located 12

miles off the coast at sludge dump areas. Hemmett explained that there are two ways to test bacteria counts. The tube count measures the most probable number, MPN. It takes 48-72 hours for confirmation. The membrane filter measure takes only 24 hours and is used for all Cape May County measurements. FOR FECAL coiiform counts the State Water Quality Standard is 50 MPN. The EPS's standard is 200 MPN. Hemmett pointed out. as does the county health department, that one high reading does not necessarily mean there is a problem in the area. "It's common to get high fecal coiiform counts after rainstorms." he said. Hemmett added that a count of 90 MPN. for example does not worry the EPA "It may be in violation of state standards, but you have to relate it to EPA standards." he said. Rules Told For Trash Pick-up COURT HOUSE - Township Committeeman Jim Alexis has announced rules and regulations to be followed by residents of Middle Township for bulk . item pick-up To arrange to have items picked up. call the Department of Public Works at 465-9555 Do not place items at curbside until an appointment is made Householders will be required to pay the minimal tipping fee charged Middle Township by the Municipal Utilities Authority for disposal. Any resident or property owner who violates this procedure will be notified to rectify the noncompliance. If. after notification and violation still exists. Middle Township will remove the material and then fines and cost of removal will be placed as a lien upon the property Alexis asked that all residents cooperate: "This program benefits all of us and is offered as a service to our residents in Middle Township Let's not abuse a good thing "

LATEST EPA readings, on June 27. show nine of the 10 county points having bacteria levels of six or less. The highest listing was in Wildwood at 42 MPN. "Our concern is more with beaches in the Wildwood area." Hemmett said. He attributed the high readings to "sewage treatment plants down there." The other county sites are: Ocean City. Peck Beach, Strathmere. Sea Isle City, Avalon. Stone Harbor. Two Mile Beach in Lower Township. Cape May and Cape May Point. EPA results are compiled into a report that is sent to the State Department of Environmental Protection <DEP). The state coordinator looks for any pro-

blems. according to Bob Runyon, chief of the Bureau of Monitoring and Data Management. IF THERE ARE no problems. the report is fileddn the National Water Quality Data Base for use in future decisions on area sewage treatment and waterfront development, said Runyon. If the EPA shows poor water quality results, the DEP notifies the county immediately. "We give them any assistance they may need," Runyon said. This help may come iff the form of laboratoryanalysis, or enforcement, he added. However, it is up to the State Department of Health, through the county, to take action and close beaches if the need arises, he said.
