House Bill Funds Projects at Cape

WASHINGTON. D C. - The House of Representatives has approved legislation which provides funding for'major energy and water projects around the country, including six projects in South Jersey sponsored by Congressman Bill Hughes (D-NJ). Hughes said he was pleased with the passage of the hill, because it contains funds to dredge a number of key waterways in South JerW sey next year, and also provide funds to develop a flood control project in Cape May Point. He expressed disappointment. however, that the legislation did not include his request for funding to begin construction of the longawaited neach erosion control and storm protection project from Cape May Inlet to Ixiwer Township "OVERALL. I am pleased with this legislation." Hughes said. "For the most part, the House has funded those projects in South Jersey which are critical to our local economy, and cannot be deferred without causing major disruptions to our fishing and boating industries. "With the House striving to reduce federal spending. I realize that it was not possible to fund every worthwhile project around the country this year." he continued. "I am pleased the total funding in the House bill is some $7 million less than the administration had requested. even though funding for several South Jersey projects has been delayed for the at least another year " FOLLOWING IS a sum mary of the South Jersey projects included in the legislation - — New Jersey Intracoastal Waterway ($2. 865.0001 These funds will be for maintenance dredging and

bank stabilization work along this waterway, which is the principal inland commerical shipping lane in New Jersey. — CAPE MAY Point ($100,000). These funds are intended to complete the advanced engineering and design work on a beach erosion control project in Cape May Point, where flooding and erosion have become serious threats to the region. — Absecon Inlet ($150, 000) This project provides for maintenance dredging to serve the commercial fishing and shellfishing industries in Atlantic County. — Barnegat Inlet ($550. 000). These funds will be used for maintenance dredging in this dangerous waterway, which is heavily utilized by commercial and recreational boaters. — Barnegat Inlet ($1,000, 000) These funds are provided to begin construction of a new south jetty, which is needed to permanately stablize the Inlet.
