Foster Parenting Classes

RIO GRANDE - Fall classes are now forming for Cape May County residents who are interested in becoming'foster parents Conducted by the Department of Human Services' Division of Youth and Family Services (DYFS) and members of the county's foster parent association, the classes are designed to introduce interesed area residents to foster parenting and to teach them skills for caring for children who are tempora rily placed in substitute homes -THE NEED for foster homes in our state is greater than the number of homes that are presently available." said Acting Human Services Commissioner Geoffrey S. Perselay. , "These training classes are sponsored by the department to ensure that quality foster care homes and prepared foster parents are available to assist children and families in need in communities throughout New Jersey." Perselay said. CURRENTLY, there are about 4.000 foster care homes in the 21 counties of the state caring for a total of 6.816 foster children who are under DYFS supervision. Cape May County has about 45 foster children in 25 active foster care homes. Training for prospective foster parents is conducted by DYFS in every county It is provided to foster parents both before and during their service in the program. THE 12 HOURS of classes are conducted during a two-week period in two evening sessions per week at the DYFS Cape May County district office. Foster parents must be at least 18 years of age. in good health and exhibit the ability to handle parental duties and responsibilities. New Jersey foster parents receive support through a monthly board reimbursement and periodic clothing •allowances They also

receive opportunities for continuing education and the support of other county foster parents through local and state foster parent associations. FOSTER families are needed for children of all ethnic backgrounds and ages. There is also a special need for foster families who can share their homes with handicapped children, teenagers and sibling groups. "Training for foster parents before they receive children in their homes is part of the division's new approach to caring for children," explained Thomas Blatner. DYFS

management team director. "THE CLASSES bring the foster parents into partnership with DYFS and make them important members of the team for the benefit of children," Blatner added. Persons interested in learning more about becoming foster parents should contact Chuck Hiddeman, Cape May County foster homefinder. at the county's district office at the Social Service Center, Rtes. 47 and 9.
