Continuing with our series on circulatory disorders, which was interrupted by our discussion of the president's polyps, we will today discuss pulmonary embolism. This most often stems from the

most severe form of phlebitis. People recovering from an operation in bed are at risk for this. Women get it slightly more frequently than men and one out of every 380 cases results in death. WHAT ACTUALLY hap- - pens is that a blood clot breaks off from the wall of a deep vein, travels through the bloodstream, through the heart and heads into the pulmonary artery which leads to the lungs. Should this moving clot, technically called an "embolus". become stuck in the artery, it can block off blood flow to the left side of the heart. This is the side that receives the fresh blood, enriched with oxygen. Such a situation is most serious. A massive pulmonary embolus is when most of the blood flow in the lungs is dammed up by the clot; this leads to death in one of every five cases. SYMPTOMS CAN vary, depending on how much blood is being blocked. Breathlessness is usual. You may have chest pain and feel faint, appear somewhat blue around your lips, and cough up bloody saliva. What can you do to prevent this? Stop smoking if you do and if you're over 35 consider an alternative method of birth control to the pill, because it is associated with thrombosus (blood clotting). AT THE onset of a possible attack, the best thing you can do is get immediate medical help. At the least blood thinners, (anti-coagulants) may need to be given, at worst with a severe embolism you may require emergency cardiac massage and oxygen, followed by surgery to remove the clot.
