A plaque honoring Vietnam MIA's and POW's w ill be erected at the base of the flagpole and a first floor closet is to be converted into a bathroom. Kehr hopes to see the job completed by the end of the year.
Stone Harbor Bays Pass Special Test M.
STONE HARBOR - The borough's backbays got a "special request" test on July 22 plus regular tests on July 23 and passed both with flying colors. The "request" came from county Health Officer Louis J. Lamanna who was concerned about high bacteria counts the previous week. But although Stone Harbor passed this one. neighbor Avalon last week had three counts higher than the state standard of 200 MPN (Most Probable Number) Samples taken July 22 at 74th. 76th and . 78th streets had readings of 540, 220 and 540 respectively. The Health Department points the finger at the ^ same culprit in both cases the Stone Harbor sewage treatment plant at 81st Street THERE WERE similar backbay counts in the low 200s in North Wildwood. a 280 in Wildwood. and 350 in Wildwood Crest. In most cases, the high j fecal coliform counts are in waters already posted against primary recreational activities because they are within one-quarter mile of the plants and their outfal lines. Lamanna blames "weekend overload" plus high water temperatures for the problem that probably won't go away until MUA (Municipal Utilities Authority) regional sewage treatment plants take over He explained that weekend crowds overload the sewage systems and that results in less time in
retention tanks which means less chlorine treatment. Result: poor quality effluent, he said.
