By Libby Demp Forres' AUGUST IS ON the agenda. Yes, August makes her debut tomorrow. SumI mer is half over — but there's half of it to go. Depends on the way you look at things. Remember the old saying about ■ whether a glass is half empty or half full? * • • One thing for sure — August is usually great beach weather. The ocean is warm ; H the sands are sublime; the living is easy. Alas, morning bird song has declined (we always like to wake up to the sound of bird song), but we also enjoy the insect chorus that begins about this time of year. Did you know the insect chorus never stops except perhaps for an hour at dawn? All day long countless grasshoppers, crickets, beetles, and cicadas are making noises, each in his own way. Listen to them. * * * DAWN arrives later and later each day, but there is that welcome coolness in the air when it arrives. Soon the sun throws its heat over the beaches. But for a time each morning its good to breathe the crisper air of a new day. ♦ * ♦ ■ We have to envy the young as we observe them walking barefoot. So many pros and cons about walking around barefoot. It does somehow lift the spirit to H walk barefoot now and then. • * • OCEAN DRIVE. Yum, yum, do you have a delicious time ahead at the Ocean Drive, located at 40th and Landis Avenue, Sea Isle City where chef Jim Hartman fulfills your every food fantasy.
A graduate of the Culinary Art School, chef Hartman was banquet chef at Caesar's for five years and his expertise puts food in a special realm at the Ocean Drive. He will combine any seafoods you choose and cook them exactly the way you desire. The veal dishes alone are worth the trip in our book. If you have a sweet tooth, we especially recommend the Double Chocolate Mousse Pie — this is a work of art in itself. In spite of the extraordinary quality of the dishes, the food is remarkably affordable. Light snacks are available too. For reservations telephone 263-2903. A CA MIA. The foods of northern Italy are the drawing card at A Ca Mia. located at 524 Washington Mall in Cape May. A full course northern Italian dinner (including choice of two appetizers, a pasta course, entree, dessert and coffee or tea) makes for a pleasant evening out. There are also hot and cold appetizers (our favorite is Ostriche Veneziana — raw oysters on the half shell with lemon, black pepper and caviar), salads, pastas, fish and meat entrees as well as a vegetarian entree. A very satisfying brunch is available — Italian omelets are featured, something a little different. • * * WHITEBRIER. The Whitebrier at 20th Street between Ocean and Dune Drive, Avalon, remains one of our most favorite restaurants, no matter what the season. There is an Early Bird Special served between 5 and 6 p.m. daily (you take $2 off the dinner entree price), and if you're able to dine early, this is well worth enjoying. The dinner menu includes a superb Broiled Combination (shrimp, scallops, clam casino, flounder and a small lobster tail broiled to perfection).
The petite filet mignon is a special cut for the more delicate appetite, served with onion rings. International coffees are available along with the famous dessert try of assorted homemade pastries and pies. * • « COLONIAL COCKTAIL LOUNGE. Come on over to the Colonial Cocktail Lounge, right on Cape May's Beach Drive at Ocean Street. There's easy listening to Seidmart and Faye every evening from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Bobby Harris flavors Monday evenings, and the romantic atmosphere that only a stellar hostelry such as the Colonial serves, can make a vacation or an IH afternoon or evening out such a memorable occasion. The Happy Hour stays underway underway until 9 p.m. THE ISLAND CAFE. Located on the Bay in Avalon, at Ocean Drive and 10th Street, The Island Cafe has a most interesting menu that can take care of dieters as well as vacationers who want H to indulge their appetite. We have only praise for the Pepper Steak, crisp green peppers and onions gently sauteed with prime beef, sim- H mered in its owns juices and served on a H bed or rice pilaf. Scallops Wanda is a special dish of tender sea scallops lightly breaded and deep fried to a golden brown, garnished with lemon slice. Luncheon choices include sandwiches, a la carte selections and several excellent salads. H
