About a month ago, I devoted a portion of this column to the new trash receptacle ordinance introduced by North Wildwood officials. Upon review, I said, "Naw, I'm going to delete that portion of the column because it (the ordinance) will cause a community uproar (it did) and the elected officials will probably amend ordinance within the month (they did)". Now, I can report on the newly revised ordinance proposed by the North Wildwood elected body. The old ordinance required trash to be contained in a secure receptacle. The days of the trash bags at the curb were to become a thing of the past. THE AMENDED statute will permit the use of trash bags with the stipulation that they be placed at the curb after dark, the evening before collection day. Obviously an attempt to outwit the sea gulls who leave the shore at night to roost somewhere in Middle Township. Included in the ordinace is a weight limit per bag. It has been deemed unlawful for any resident to place a trash bag at the curb when the contents exceed 50 pounds. I guess when you are in a position of having to legislate, you must include such matters, but I don't of arry North Wildwoodians who are going to tote a 50-pound bag out to the curb. The chances of leaving 37 pounds of trash along your lawn is just too great. IN THE (REST, however, it is an issue that needs to be addressed. According to several past and present public works officials the hag weight is an iarea of concern. In i Wildwood Crest, residents jare not required to haul I their bags to the curb. The chore is done by a public works employe who precedes the truck by about an hour The advent of "super sacks" with a glimmering steel-like finish, coupled with the curb service provided by the borough, has left many a public works employe grimacing as he (or they) attempt to hoist the parcel into the truck. Shame on you heavybaggers. show some consideration. lest you find . yourselves restricted by I ordinance This is probably a good time to remind you of your , community's recycling ef- I forts. Each community has its own recycling program and valuable programs they are. By complying with the community program, you not only lighten the load going to the dump (which will cost you less as a taxpayer) you are conserving valuable natural resources. It only makes sense, so call your local representative for your community's recycling information. THE RECONSTRUCTION of North Wildwood Boulevard is an issue that will be squarely faced in a public hearing at the Wildwood Golf Club in midAugust. The North Wildwood City Council is /urging all residents to
voice their support for Alternate Route "C". However, this is an Island issue and residents all along Five Mile Beach should make an effort to become informed. According to city officials, Alternate Route "C" represents the most plausible, least controversial option available. Any alternative would simply become bogged down in a quagmire of environmental concerns. Many residents seem to agree. THE POINT remains, something must be done about the deteriorating condition of North Wildwood Boulevard and all residents of the Island should address the issue. It is not an exclusive North Wildwood issue. On several occasions, while serving with the Wildwood Crest Ambulance Corps, we were forced to exit the island via North Wildwood Boulevard. Not fun! In fact, in any emergency, North Wildwood Boulevard
may become a major egress artery. It simply cannot handle the traffic safely. IN THE CASE of an emergency, we residents and tourists have precious few alternatives on which to flee our fragile barrier island, and when one of th? alternatives is in dire need of reconstruction the scenario is upsetting. In short, get involved in this issue! Whether you agree with Alternate "C" or Alternate "A" or even if you prefer to muddy the waters and cloud the issue with your own suggestions ; get involved! The more support there is out there to do something, the greater the chances are of something being done! Tom Flud, erudite administrator for the City of North Wildwood, may hate me for it, but I can't resist: If you need further infor- - mation on this very important issue call Flud at North Wildwood City Hall. In the past, Flud has pro(Page 49 Please)
