Byrne, president of the Independent Insurance Agents of Cape May County. Drownings, Byrne pointed out, are the second leading cause of accidental deaths in the United States for people under 45. There are approximately 6,000 drownings annually. BYRNE recommended that people follow the safety precautions outlined by the American Red Cross: Learn to swim well enough to survive an emergency. Never swim alone. Supervise all children when near a body of water. Don't swim if you are tired, have been drinking, or have a medical problem. Keep the proper safety equipment around and observe rules of the swimming area. TRY TO swim in a supervised area. Don't use inflatable devices to go over your head if you can't swim.
