State Police Coverage Satisfies Communities
I Bv TOM FLYNN I TUCKAHOE - Officials of Woodbine Borough and Upper and Dennis townships said after a closed meeting last week they are satisfied with state i police coverage of their communities, and do not foresee any need to form local departments, k The hour-long session I I was closed to the 10 , I residents and reporters I who wanted to attend. I Assemblyman Guy MuI ziani, who called the I [ meeting, explained that i some subjects, such as number of troopers and time of patrols, could be I useful to criminals if 1 discussed publicly Raymond Battan. who is Republican Muziani's Democratic opponent in
the November election, also was denied entrance Muziani said Battan was not an elected official and could not be given preference over those not permitted to attend. THE PUBLIC was admitted after the session to hear statements and ask questions. Muziani called the meeting of municipal } representatives, state police officials, and countySheriff James Plousis to discuss residents^ complaints about traffic problems. The problem arose at a county freeholders' meeting last month, when residents , of Ocean View and Dennisville voiced traffic concerns at Route 550 (Ocean View-Woodbine Road) and Main Street in Dennisville. Freeholders advised residents to consider a local police force. State Police Capt Charles Purgavie, commander of the southern third of the state, said last week he anticipates 300 new troopers statewide in
the next few years, and believes that the Port Norris barracks will receive its share. "I can assure you. you will see more police at Port Norris," he said. DENNIS TOWNSHIP Solicitor Jeffery April said the township is working with a traffic analyst on alternate truck routes and reducing speed limits on Route 550. Purgavie said the state police intend to have their engineer study the truck problem in the area. "That is going to be addressed," ' he said. Upper Township Mayor Daniel Beyel said, "the township government and residents are totally satisfied with the state police." He added that, due to environmental restrictions on development '-in the Pinelands, the township will see limited growth and will not expand to the point where local departments will be necessary WOODBINE MAYOR Ernest Materio also said his community is satisfied with the performance of the state police. • , "We find no fault with the ! state police," he said According to a recent growth capacity analysis prepared by the county planning board, the three communities have signifi cant room for, development That analysis, which will be part of an updated master plan, allows for the following growth in. dwelling units: Dennis, from 3.3107 to 9.134; Upper, from 4.423 to 12.122; Woodbine, from 786 to 5.246 ALTHOUGH both residents and officials classified the police's response time as very good. Beyel told of one case when it took troopers 45 minutes to answer a call. Purgavie said that calls are assigned by a priority basis When three or four calls are received simultaneously, officers are dispatched to the most urgent The state troopers who cover these communities are based in Port Norris. Cumberland County They also use the former headI
I quarters of the Woodbine police to file reports and to » process drunk drivers. The Avalon station, on the i Garden State Parkway, is I responsible mainly for # patrolling the parkway ' • Louis Weiner. president I of the Ocean View Civic ; Association, asked i Purgavie if the state police I were considering a station i in the county. He replied he could not answer that, but Muziani said he would lobby for one. citing the need - for a satelite station. After the meeting. Weiner said he was satisfied with the response to his group's complaints. "They're heading in the I right direction." he said.
WIDE TURN — A truck turns right at Main Street and Route 610 in Dennisville^rucks | on neighborhood roads have been the source of complaints by Ocean View and Dennisville residents about state police coverage of their communities. But municipal officials last week said they were satisfied.
