Center Makes Beach Tags 1 For Five County Resorts
CREST HAVEN - When you go to the beach you may not like having to buy a beach tag for the privilege. But if you live in or visit _ any of the South Jersey |f resorts that require tags. ™ you can take some comfort in the fact that you are helping handicapped per--V sons earn a living. l\ Jersey Cape Diagnostic. ~f Training and Opportunity ' Center. Inc.. Crest Haven Road, manufactures tags for every resort in Cape CMay County except Stone Harbor. . ^ Ocean City. Sea Isle City, y Avalon. Cape May and 'Cape May Point together ;with seven other com;munities all order their • tags from the diagnostic J center, a non-profit J. sheltered workshop. ^ EMPLOYING 20 hang| dicapped individuals, the center has contracts to make just under 1 million tags this year. They come in 12 different shapes, and 15 different colors. The tags are made of vinyl with a solid brass safety pin for attachment to items of clothing. Workers at the
diagnostic center stamp out the tags on a special machine, attach the pins, and pack them in tamperproof clear plastic bags for shipment. •WE ARE THE ONLY sheltered workshop in the county or state, as far as I know, that is doing this," said William A. Kamerzel. director of the center's industrial division. "Communities can either ask us to bid on their tags, or they can deal with us directly because as a sheltered workshop we are exempt from the public contract law that requires competitive bids." said Kamerzel. The center produces tags for daily, weekly, weekend, monthly, and seasonal use. Prices vary from as little as $2 for some daily tags to as much as $20 for seasonal tags sold by the Borough of Belmar in Northern New Jersey. ORDERS FOR TAGS vary. too. The center fills orders for as few as 250 tags at a cost of about $125 to orders in the hundreds of thousands that cost from $10,000 to $12,000. One contract is for 400.000 tags. Base pay for workers at the center is the minimum wage of $3.35 an hour. It is adjusted upward of or downward depending on individual capabilities.
