By Libby Demp Forrest THE LIVING IS EASY during August and you might as well enjoy it. The chill of autumn and winter will soon be whistling around the corner so let your hair down, put a smile on your face, and go out and have a good time this month. All things considered, August is just the month for storing up sun and clean air and green thoughts to last a spell. * * ♦ Friday is Family Day. We don't know who originated it, or what families are supposed to do on Family Day, but a day for families seems like a good idea. How about a three day weekend to celebrate? July's got Independence Day, and September's got Labor Day, and in betIween a little something extra would be nice, don't you think? * + * SCHOOL DAYS, SCHOOL DAYS are getting closer and closer. But for the next several weeks, a blissful lull usually occurs. We have to envy the kids their ten week vacations We had them too once upon a time and in retrospect they never seemed to last long enough. There was that first day of school looming just ahead until a time came when there weren't any first days of school left, and there weren't any ten week vacations left either. Alas. ... Who can deny one of the nicest ways to enjoy the summertime is by eating out.

Here are some of the most enjoyable places we've been to lately: UGLY MUG. The sidwalk cafe of The Ugly Mug is a bright spot of the Washington Street Mall where passersby, impromptu conversation and baby buggies make for fascinating street scene while The Mug waitresses keep mugs filled and fill orders from the ample menu. The sandwiches and platters are as great as ever; the chowder is delicious; and the desserts delectable. There's live entertainment indoors at the Mug and the familiar atmosphere that helped put Cape May on the map. The Ugly Mug is located at 426 Washington Street. It's o'pen seven days a week. - * » • ISLAND CAFE. Spend a little happy time at The Island Cafe on the Bay in Avalon. Located on Ocean Drive at 10th Street, (opposite the Avalon Recreation field), it features lighthearted pleasures for casual dining breakfast and lunch time. Fresh Blueberry Pancakes are a weekday breakfast special Monday to Friday. Freshly made and delicious, they cost a mere $2.50. Vacationing dieters can stick to their guns with a Dieter's Delight Weekday Luncheon Special For $3 25. enjoy a ripe tomato stuffed with fresh made tuna or chicken salad, garnished with hard boiled egg and cole slaw, and served on a bed of lettuce. » * • CHALFONTE. The Chalfonte at 301 Howard Street, Cape May has achieved fame far and wide for its unique dining

room where Southern food is served family style. Unless you've dined at the Chalfonte before, you've never experienced the good cooking of an earlier era when summertime shore dining was synonomus with old-fashioned ways of preparing and serving only the freshest foods. The King Edward's Bar is a comfortable place to also enjoy a lively atmosphere. JACK'S PLACE. Jack's Place at 36th and Ocean Drive, Avalon is a great place to drink, dine, dance while you're on vacation. There are musical interludes, special features, happy hours, weekend breakfasts, and munching from 1 1 a.m. to fpl 11 p.m. "Ladies Nite Sunday" features |M regular drinks for $1.25 from 9 p.m. until the last call. A Hy Lit Dance Party is held |jp9 Tuesday, and includes oldies, goodies, and the top 40. Pina Coladas cost $1.75 during the Hy Lit dance party. AVALON'S SIDEWALK CAFE. Man and woman were meaht to spend summer Bgl out of doors, and a recommended place to In enjoy the outdoors while enjoying exquisite ice cream ( man and woman were meant to eat ice cream — lot of it — during the summer), is of course, Avalon's Sidewalk Cafe, at 26th Street at the Bay. Only all natural ice cream is served, in sundaes, cones, on waffles and homemade sugar cones, with fresh fruit to keep you cool all summer long.
