Quiet Day at the Chamber: Less Than 600 Questions
By BECKY BERNSTEIN CREST HAVEN - Some times there are six of them scurrying about The phones don't quit, and every minute brings another question Yesterday it was outrageous. Eight hundred forty-five people passed through the doors in search of.. Today it was calm. As of 3:30 p.m. only 566 had entered. . Seven days a week. 9 1 a.m. to 5 p.m.. the doors of 1 the county Chamber of Commerce swing open and shut as lost tourists enter and informed tourists depart July 25 was just another day. "Jl'ST l\ TOWN for the day." many of their inquiries began, but there the 1 similarity ended The staff stood poised and ready for quick response to the queries that came • their way "Can you tell me where there's a MAC machine.'" asked one flustered woman Benjamin Wapner. retired owner of Atlantic Auto Supply in Wildwood. whipped out the yellow pages and his yellow pad to draw her a map •We came here for lunch." began one couple. "Are you interested in seafood'.'" asked Helen E. Hart, who has worked for the chamber under the state's Green Thumb program for 14 months "Yes." theygaid •Are you going to Cape May"" " Yes " "Come here." she said as she led them to a stand of restaurant brochures "IS THERE an exit six"" asked another harried man "I'm looking for a furniture warehouse " "Five miles down the road, take exit six." Wapner said "The furniture warehouse is on the leftha'nd side "
nnijdiiiui iidpiiri in iiiiub Monthly statistics show that the chamber is serving hundreds more people this year than last In June. 9.699 people visited the information center compared to 6.776 who came last June. The building's walls are lined with showcases that display everything from hotel accommodations and beach offerings to lost children bulletins. Pamphlets in racks around the room discuss tips for a carefree vacation, limo rental, fudge, fishing, recycling, camping, and crime prevention. However, supplies are scarce due to the number of Visitors The chamber has had to go so far as to ask parents not to allow iheir children to collect the bro chures. so serious travelers may use them "WE DO EVERYTHING we can do to provide general information every day." said Hart Benjamin .Wapner of Wildwood Crest.
"It gets hectic: the place gets full of people." added I Wapner During the lull in the < day's activity, he admitted < he gets bored. "But when you're busy it's not bad." < he said, as two more tour- I /ists arrived. "Can you tell me how to < get to the Wetlands In- I stitute"" one asked. I "Is there a public library ! around here"" questioned ] another A third man entered, not : quite sure of what he was ! looking for i "Are there any motels this way that are by the seashore ' " he asked. "Where do you want to go"" Wapner asked i "We" re not sure — we'd like to do some shelling Do they have any motels in that area"" "Oh we're loaded with them," smiled Wapner, already reaching for the list the man would need to choose from THE CHAMBER keeps a reference, updated daily, of vacancies in member hotels, motels, and guesthouses Tourists can use the hotel hotline or the staff people themselves will call the hotels The chamber will not. however, quote rates, or book the tourists "We don't make any recommendations, we don't show any favoritism." said Wapner, as Evelyn Bailie, the chamber's secretary-book-keeper from North Cape May. bustled behind the counter filled with maps, postcards, souvenir buttons. and keychains. "Did I tell you about the lady who called yesterday and asked for a list of all the bed and breakfast houses in Cape May?" ask ed Hart. "1 finished giving her all the locations and she asked Are they all in New Jersey?" " Bailie said the chamber still gets inquiries about the status of Higbee beach. "1 wasted 20 minutes explaining where the beach was for this man." she said. "Right before he hung up. he asked if the beach still allowed nude sun bathing I said I'm sorry, that was banned two years ago.''
"You killed his day." Wapner A TRICK DRIVER entered with a hesitant question "Yoi^ wouldn't kffow where 266 Fishing Creek Road is would you?" Bailie said many truck drivers need local directions for their deliveries. A large map of all county streets usually solves their problems. Bailie said that although she is a native of Wildwood. she is always learning more about the county. "I find new places all the time." she said. Hart said serious information requests have included directions to a funeral home, a hospital, an animal hospital, and. more dramatically, the nearest emergency room. But Usually, she said, summer information requests are tourist -oriented. "ONCE IN A WHILE you get a bad apple in the barrel." Wapner said. "When it's hot outside they get lost and then they get indignant." . Hart recalled several cases where tourists have been more than mildly aggravated when they enter the chamber "Some people come into Jersey to go to Atlantic City and they get here and they get mad as Hades because they have to go all the way back." she exv plained, as she ran 10* answer a phone. "County Chamber of Commerce, may I help you?"
