Old Brick Celebrates Rally Marks 271 Years

COLD SPRING - The Kev Fred Christian Bischoff. pastor of the Cold Sprjng Presbyterian Church, will be the speaker at the 271st Anniversary Service and the 78th Rally Day to be held in the historic church Sunday, beginning^ II a.m. The selection of Rev Hischoff is an historic departure from the usual Rally Day procedure, since it has been the practice for many years to invite guest . ministers to bring the anniversary and Rally Day message*. RKV. BISCIIOFF has been pastor of the church since 1980 and will retire from the active ministry Sept 1 after :18 years of service. He was ordained to the clergy March 9 1917 He and Mrs Hischoff plan to move to Virginia

He is a graduate of Bloomfield College and has a Master of Divinity Degree from Princeton Seminary. Rev Bischoff has been not only an active pastor but has had many responsible and irhportant positions with the Presbyterian denomination He completes a very successful and productive ministry at the Cold Spring Presbyterian Church During his pastorate, member ship in the church has in- . creased, activities of the church organizations have enlarged, a new liturgy has been introduced at the communion services and the historic aspects of the church have been emphasized IN ADDITION, a new roof has been added to the church building and air conditioning has been in stalled in the sanctuary.

The Cold Spring Presbyterian Church, known as "Old Brick" because of its red brick exterior, was founded by a group of the earliest settlers in the county descendants of passengers on the Mayflower - and it has enjoyed 271 years of continuous service. The congregation has worshipped in four buildings since it was organized in 1714 at Coxe Hall, built by Royal Physican Daniel Cox of London in 1687, secondly in a log cabin 1718 -1762; in a frame building 1762 1823. when the present church building was erected. Surrounding this historic and lovely edifice is the 30-acre old cemetery containing about 14,000 marked graves, dating from 1742. RALLY DAY. first held at the church 1908. has been through all the years the outstanding anniversary service of the summer It is an opportunity for descendants of former members and old families to return to their roots and lor visitors in the area to worship at one of
