Tabernacle To Mark 182 Years

ERMA — Dr. Ernest Lee, former district superintendent for the New Jersey Annual Conference, i will be the guest speaker this Sunday as Tabernacle Methodist celebrates its 182 i years of service to the community. Lynn Smith-Eldon will be the guest soloist for the morning service. New members will be received into the congregation during the morning service, as well as recognition of long-time members. The present Tabernacle Church building was consecrated May 1, 1966, and is the fifth in the congregations long history. The original was built in 1803 on land known as Swaintown. The land was given by Memucan Hughes, a descendant of the pilgrim, John Howland. Although Methodism was originally introduced to America in 1766 in New York City, it was not brought to South Jersey until 1778. Benjamin Abbott

began preaching in Abram Woolson's home in Fishing Creek and meetings were held there for several I years. Woolson was the area's first convert to j Methodism and direct descendants of his are ac- 1 tive members of the con- I gregation today. Circuit riders begun i ministering to the area in 1771, but it wasn't until 1796 that their visits began to be more frequent, coming once every four weeks in- ( stead of once every six.

Richard Swain was one of the early circuit riders. Tabernacle Methodist became a station in 1862, and had its first minister assigned here full time. The charge Rev. Edward Durrell took over was as Cold Spring, Tabernacle, Erma. It is now listed as Erma Tabernacle.
