A Contrast in Father-Son Fishing Trips
It was a study in contrasts There were two family groups aboard. One consisted of a father and two youngsters around 6 and 9. The other was a father and a son about 5 years old They were on a four hour fishing trip The dad with the two kids spent his entire trip helping the kids He hailed their hooks, tended to their
tangled lines, helped them when they hooked a fish, and even handed his rod to one of them when he caught a fish himself. It was obvious that he had planned to take his kids fishing that day Since it was their day. he devoted the bulk of the time making sure they had a good time at the expense of his own fishing
I LATER learned that he takes his kids fishing often But. when he is going on a serious fishing trip he does not take them. His feeling is that he cannot fish and tend to their needs, and occasionally. he wants to fish himself. By doing it his way. he's getting the best of both worlds. He shares a lot of fun time with his kids and still gets some serious fishing done. It was pretty obvious that the other dad approached things differently. He made a conscious effort to fish himself. He devoted little time to the youngster he had with him. IT WAS AS if once aboard it was every angler for himself and the 5-year-old was left to fend for himself This dad didn't check the bait, and he seemed irritated when the youngster tangled the line Which kids do a lot. While the dad caught some fish, the youngster did not. It was apparent that the dad came to fish and the youngster sort of tagged along I do not think the 5 year-old. nor. in fact, the dad. had as good a time as the trio on the other side of the boat. Mainly because . I believe, that group's pleasure was centered on making sure the kids had fun fishing. The smaller group's emphasis was apparently to see that the dad had fun. WIIY DWELL on this? First, and foremost, in this day and age. all kids need as much parental supervision 'as possible But they need a lot of experience sharing of a pleasant nature Fishing is but one of them If youngsters are enter tained by an activity, they will want to return to it If .'they are bored and lose interest. their energies might well be directed elsewhere I can speak a lot from personal experience Had I. as well as my brothers, been restricted from the countless hours of fishing, hunting, campirig. hiking, biking and general outdoor play that consumed most of
our timd and an awesome amount of our energies, we would have done something ANI) WITH that much energy, and that much creative talent for inventing ways to be busy, the four of us would have approached the idle time with real enthusiasm — probably in ways which would have been less than cbnstructive. This is not a parental guidance column. We have spent a lot of time with kids. The best advice we can give any parent is that if there is an interest on the part of a youngster which is wholesome, nurture it and encourage it. And. if your kids happen to like the things you enjoy such as outdoor recreation, participation sports and spectator sports, 'encourage it and share with them. It will be a good experience for you and them. Just remember that when you take a kid fishing (or wherever i, it no longer is your day. The day belongs to the youngster.
