Charlie Cantz of Green Creek was presented with a Middle Township Police Department Commendation Award by Mayor Michael Voll at the township committee meeting Aug. 1. Cantz received the award for spotting an illegal dumper depositing trash at Thompson's Pit on Indian Trail. Burleigh. Trash may be legally deposited at the county Municipal Utilities Authority's transfer station on Shunpike Road in Burleigh for a $26 tipping fee. This fee is small compared to a fine ranging from $250 to $500 and a 90-day jail term for violating the local dumping ordinance. Cantz is a member of the Court House Kiwanis Club and the Mayor's Advisory Council. MAYOR VOLL. Committeeman Charles Leusner, Middle Township School Superintendent Dr. Theodore Johnson, and Middle Township High School Vice-Principal Bob Penkethman spent two days on a VIP tour of seeing the modern army at work: and the National Guard Unit at Fort Bragg. N.C. The local 154th Unit of the New Jersey National Guard invited the group on the trip at the request of the unit commander at Fort Bragg. The group was flown by plane from
McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey to its North Carolina destination. Penkethman went on a similar tour several years ago to the Air Force Base in Biloxi, Miss. CARL BAKER, along with is wife Dessie, attended the Optimist International Convention in Albuquerque. NM in late June. Baker was sworn in to his post as Optimist Governor of the State of New Jersey at the convention. His goals are to concentrate on preventing drug abuse and helping the hearing impaired people when his term officially begins Oct. 1. The State Convention of the Optimist Club will be held at the Golden Eagle Inn in Cape May Oct. 12 — 14. The convention will focus on leadership training. Baker is a charter member of the Middle Township Optimist Club and has been an industrial arts teacher at Middle Township High Schcwl for the past 30 years in addition to serving as head baseball coach and assistant football coach for periods of time during his tenure at the school. He also serves as chairman of the Middle Township Recreation Advisory Council, which he was instrumental in . forming. The Bakers reside in Swainton and have three
daughters, Vicky. Kim, and Carla. Rick Safford and Margi Herman, both of Villas, were each given Middle Township Police Department Commendation Awards for rendering assistance to the police department following, an accident on Indian Trail July 26. Safford was commended for assisting police in setting flares and performing other tasks. Herman was praised for covering the accident victim with a blanket and talking to her in order to keep her alert and to prevent her from going into shock. A NUMBER of local children participated in the Maze contest that was held at the Leroy May Center in Court House July 29. The fastest runners through the maze, which was said to be the largest in the state, won prizes. The winners of the Middle Township Recreation Department contest were: first, Mike Watson. 6. and second. Kris Arnold, 5, in the 7-and-under age group. Jose O'Connor, 8, was first and Stephanie O'Connor. 9, second in the 8 to 11 age group. Eric Gass, 12, and Derek Davis. 14. won first and second respectively in the 12-and-over group.
