Sfarman (RCA) "PG" Although this doesn't come close to director John Carpenter's Assault On Precinct J3. Halloween or The Thing. Starman 'is, nevertheless, an entertaining piece of work. Basically, it's an old fashioned love story set in an unusual science fiction setting. Jeff Bridges portrays an alien using the body of Karen Allen's deceased husband to investigate Earth. After an understandably rocky start, the two eventually fall head over heels in love with each other. Bridges is magnificent in the lead role, using facial expressions to show wide- % eyed innocence and confuf sion with short-tempered I earthlings. All in all, StarJ man is a safe bet for an I entertaining evening. m My only worry is that ■ having tasted success with I Starman. John Carpenter, □ a true master of terror, will I be stricken with the Steven H Spielberg disease and ■ devote his career to more I sentimental -type films. The Cotton Club (Em- | bassy) "PG" Frances Ford H Coppola set out to create a h 20's/30's period piece that I revolved around the legenj dary Harlem nightspot The ■ Cotton Club. In this are some exJ hilarating musical perforI mances, marvelous sets, J some good old fashioned ■ "gangster picture" scenes, I especially those that 3 feature Bob liaskins and ■ Fred G wynne, and a solid, J dependable casfl. of Richard ■ Gere. Gregory Hines, ■ Diane Lane, and Nicholas □ Cage. Its flaws are, unform tunately, enough to keep it ■■ from being the success it ■ could have been For one J thing, the pacing is so I unbelievably slow one can't H help but feel bored with ■■ much of The Cotton Club. Coppola also fails to give j his characters life, I resulting in the audience's H not caring what happens to U them * Then. The Cotton Club is

" the victim of too many sube plots adding to the confun sion because few of them n are fully developed, r Stylistically, The Cotton i, Club is a success, but it ultimately fails because of - a storyline that just doesn't ; get off the ground. 1 Bachelor Party (CBS/Fox) "R" Here's an i hysterical romp starring f the charismatic Tom i Hanks as a guy who is ! about to get married. His girlfriend's (Tawny Kii taen) well-to-do parents • despise the carefree i Hanks, but that, along with her jealous ex-boyfriend, i can't stop him. I Along the way his zany friends throw him a bachelor party that gets ! crazier by the second. Mixed in with all the party pranks is the sharp wit and fast delivery of Hanks, which alone would make this tape worth renting. The rest of the c$st does a fine job supporting Hanks in this totally out of control bash. Have, a good laugh and give Bachelor Party one of your evenings.
