"1 Bankruptcy
(From Page 53) seconds," said Faith. SHE REMEMBERED that at their hearing the courtroom was filled with other people who were also - declaring bankruptcy. She said their lawyer had told them that 1982 was a bad I year for bankruptcies, j In the fail, after the bankruptcy was declared, Joe joined the army fulltime to get some steady pay. In April, 1983, Faith and the children moved to Fort Knox, Ky.. where he was stationed. But Tie was injured and received a medical discharge. No other jobs were to be found in Kentucky. While job hunting through that fall, the couple sold everything they had to pay bills. "When we got back to Cape May County, we had $14.78 in our pockets," Faith said.
They went on welfare for one month. "DON'T ASK us how. but in the middle of winter we both found jobs here — me as a secretary and he as a cook," she said. They continued in those positions through last summer when Joe was offered a j^b mowing a lawn. He did good work, according to his customer who referred him to others. "I picked up a lawn here and there," he said, "and then some hedge work.'"" Over the winter he and Faith discussed opening a lawn care business. They raided the library, and read every book they could find on the subject and . related topics. Early this spring they decided to run a lawn care ad to sample the market. "The phone just didn't stop ringing," smiled Faith. "If you want money it's out there," said Joe. "We hit rock bottom and now we know better." he said. IN ITS FIRST year,, the lawn care operation is just breaking even. "Anything extra we make we put right back into the business." said Faith. But their bankruptcy still haunts them. They are able to manage everyday needs, but long-term goals pose problems In early May. when they tried for a $2,000 business loan, "to put it nicely, the bank said "we don't think it's gonna work,' " said Joe. Faith said she can understand the bank's position. "When you declare bankruptcy, you're going back on your word." she explained. "Banks are afraid of that " She noted, however, that once you declare bankjbptcy. you can't declare again for another seven years. •WE CANT GET a lot of the things most people take for granted." she said. "Most people wouldn't think twice about trading in for a new car and getting a
car loan. We have to pay cash." The couple needed a pick-up truck to haul their lawn care equipment. Because the loan didn't go through, they had to settle for a 1971 Blazer, which they bought with cash after saving for several months. "The only things we want credit for now are a car and a home," said l^aith. The couple's' son, Eddie, sometimes helps with the work one or two mornings a week They are teaching him the value of a dollar, as they will teach Lea. and their newest family addition. Holly, months Last year, their business brought the couple $10,000. They are hopeful that receipts will increase as they build a good name for their effort. They have jobs lined up to Thanksgiving Because of a new state law, they will not be able to go on unemployment this winter, since they own their own business, according to Faith. They realize that they may have to scrape for work, but they will make it. she said "When we get depressed about being broke, making just enough to pay the bills, we remind ourselves what has happened these past three years." Faith explained. "We're poor, but we're happier." she said.
