Hoyas, Sixers Champs
STONE HARBOR - The boys basketball leagues concluded the past week with two well played championship games. The Junior boys Blue Hoyas beat the Green Fightin' Irish 55-39. The Hoyas were led by Mickey McCann's 22 points and most valuable player Mike James' 14 points. The Fightin' Irish, without captain Jim Shannihan scrapped hard with sportsmanship award winner Bob Carey contributing 18 points and Barry Lamb tossing in 16 points, but did not have the fire power to hold off the Hoyas. The final standings: Hoyas 6-1 Fightin' Irish 4-3 Explorers j-j Quakers ch; THE SENIOR boys started with two playoff games as the Sixers played Hughes Goes To Sheppard ERMA — Airman Robert S. Hughes, son of Robert M. and Mary Ann Hughes of 547 Breakwater Rd., has been assigned to Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, after completing Air Force basic training. The airman will now receive specialized instruction in the aircraft maintenance field. He is a 1983 graduate of Lower Cape May Regional High School.

The Celtics, who finished the season at 1-6, gave the Sixers all they could handle before faltering by a score of 54-47. The Nuggets also struggled against the National 1st Spot Hanging CAPE MAY - Burke Builders and Law's Printing continue their yearlong struggle for possession of first place as there is one regular season game left in Men's National Softball League play. That game involves Law's Printing and Midas Muffler. If Law's wins that game, it will be regular season champ because it has a better head to head record against Burke Builders. IN GAMES this past week, Lant's defeated Doc's Custard 20-0, piling up 25 hits in the victory. Law's got three hits from John Fogel, John Fuller. Mike Moore and Will Mendo and two hits from Bill Cook, Kevin Sherman. Carl Umscheid. Ernie Troiano and Ted Ferrante, plus 4 RBI's each from Sherman and Umscheid. In its 9-3 win over Midas Muffler, Law's Printing got three hits from Fuller and Umscheid with" Umscheid driving in four runs. The game was highlighted by a spectacular diving catch by rightfielder Rick Huntington which saved three runs. Doc's Custard had a good week as it clinched fourth place with two wins. Doc's defeated Bayshore Lounge 17-1 as Jeff Tomlin had four hits and Joe Tomlin and Rich Rheinsmith had three hits apiece. Ed Grant chipped in with a home run. Mike Reardon had three hits in Doc's 11-5 win over Midas Muffler. Lakers before winning 61-46. The championship game looked as though it would be a dog fight between the Sixers and Nuggets, who split during the regular season. However, the Nuggets struggled from the field and the Sixers took advantage to win 50-37. Rich Murphy led all scorers with 19 points while teammate Sean Sweeney scored 16 points. This wrapped up the summer league at Stone Harbor with the final standings at: Sixers • 6-1 Nuggets 4-3 Lakers 3-4 Celtics 1-6
Doubles Winners STONE HARBOR - The annual Mixed Doubles Tennis Tournament was won by Lee Jones and Tess Campbell, who defeated Jennifer and Chris Emkey from Wyomissing, PA., 6-2, 6-3 in the finals. Jones and Campbell breezed to the friends with wins over Dan Wilhelm and Susan Hahn, and Janet and Jeff Kline. The Emkeys' defeated Todd Piercy and Kim Craczyk in the first round then defeated Harry and June Massbrook in the semi-finals 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.
