By LIBBY DEMP FORREST AUGUST IS ON THE WANE summer has about a month to go. While summer's finale is a little poignant for those who'd like it to go on forever, there are still lots of good beach days ahead to enjoy the peak water temperatures of late summer. ^ • * * The insect chorus is still going strong this week. The critters are still singing away day and night. They make a musical racket that adds to the tempo of this time of year. Listen to them go at it when you have a chance. » ♦ * The college age kids are finding their thoughts preoccupied with packing up and taking their leave, then back to life on campus. And they're counting up just how many dollars they earned this summer toward their education. Higher learning is expensive nowadays, as parents and students know so well. * * * AS THE FIRST DAY of school grows closer and closer, we have to contrast the first day of school when we were youngsters from the way it is today. One thing the first day of school always brings memories of were squeeky new shoes and recovering last year's loose leaf book with fresh oilcloth. Kids don't seem to redo books anymore. * * • We encourage you to enjoy every moL m
ment of summer while it lasts. How about enjoying some time out at one of the local dining spots? Read on ... SNICKERS. Scanlon's, located at the Concord, 78th and Dune Drive, Avalon serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and cocktails, all in good taste, with .special emphasis on attentive service. The sauteed shrimp and scallops is a special favorite of ours — the shrimp and scallops are sauteed with quartered mushrooms in a champagne cream sauce. The linguini with fresh shrimp in a white sauce is a real appetizer pleaser. Be sure to check the chalk board for a listing of the nightly specials. THE FILLING STATION. The Filling Station, on Lafayette Street, Cape May (across from the Acme Market) has always been one of our favorite Cape May restaurants. Harry and Mac started "Beat the Clock" dinners a while back — served 4:30 to 5:59 p.m. (frankly, we make it our business to get there at 4:30) and get a special platter, including special vegetables and a house salad for $4.30. If you arrive at 4:53, your meal costs 4:53. It pays to be an early bird — the choices are unfailingly delicious and filling. W
