Crowd at Stone Harbor's 19K4 Merchant's Day event. There Are Places That Kids Can Go
By M'ELLEN ROWLAND STONE HARBOR - Several times we've beejn asked "Is there any place where nice kids can go and have fun other than yacht clubs or organized dances down here''" We have always pleaded ignorance. Our kids are too old and our grandchildren too young to be helpful, so
last time we were asked "Is there any nice place in town where they can meet somebody their age and have fun?" We asked teenagers themselves. TO OUR surprise, the answer was "Yes" and they told me where. We - wanted to check for ourselves and went to Con- . ley's Amusement Center. 326 96th St. Open 10 a.m. to II p.m. Conley's is immaculately kept, has numerous electronic games, sells soft drinks. Philadelphia pretzels, posters, buttons and tee shirts, and is pleasantly but stricrly supervised by owners Tom, Mike, and Norma Conley, their mother. No smoking is allowed and sound levels are controlled. TOM CONLEY was in charge while ,we were there. He's a recent graduate of the College of Boca Raton. Fla. His brother. Mike, was a student at George Washington University, when the center opened and now is a Villanova Law School student Tom also told us that since he is no longer a student "we'll stay open after September and lots of weekends" Another great place for meeting people and learning a terrific sport is Harbor Surf & Sail. 379 96th St Pat and Carol Trumbower rented this facility last year, purchased and renovated it over the winter AS CAROL says. "We have turned it into a really first-class. Stone Harborlike" operation ' It has immaculate bathroom facilities, a mall store with water skiing and sailing apparel and patrons can buy or rent surf or sail boards and have them delivered to their home Very best feature is one-on-one instruction in surfsailing or sailing lessons They now own a sailboat for this purpose Accepted as pupils, everyone weighing1 80 pounds or over. Three are for adults as well as ] children - they have \ students age 8 to 78 years. ,] This year instructions will J continue on weekends from i Fridays through Mondays ] as long as weather permits l WE HAVE learned there ] is another spot which at- 1 tracts youth but have not ] been able to check it out J personally yet It's Rigi's j 214 96lh St. We understand } it also has plenty of games 1 and is well supervised. } We called Arlene Stern- ^ berg, who gives out infor- h matron along with Alice jj at the Chamber of ^ office almost ^ next door and they say it is ^ very popular, particularly, ) on rainy days. ?!
