STONE HARBOR - The Bird Sanctuary, located at the southern end of this borough on Third Avenue between tilth and 117th ^streets, is the only heronry in the United States sponsored by a municipality. The tract of approximately 21 acres was set ^fside by ordinance in 1947

at the suggestion of the Witmer Stone Club, a local wildlife organization. The sanctuary is registered as a national Landmark by the National Park Services. While visitors are not permitted to enter the sanctuary, the parking area on Third Avenue offers an excellent vantage point from which to view the birds. During the nesting season, from about midMarch through late July or early August, the popula tion exceeds 5.000 birds which can be seen flying out to feeding areas and back to the sanctuary throughout the day After the nesting season, few birds can be seen during the day. The best times for viewing are at daybreak and the two hours just before sunset Great egrets, snowy egrets, green herons, little blue herons, glossy ibises, night herons and cattle egrets all use the sanctuary The population of Yellow Corn Night Heron has increased from four to ten pairs. As winter approaches, most of these birds migrate south Occasionally a few herons will remain throughout the winter. Thousands of visitors from every state and over 30 foreign countries have visited this popular Stone Harbor attraction each year
