Ocean City Also Pays 7.25 1st Savings , Alone , Hikes Money Market Interest
By JOE ZELNIK Was it the shock of losing its usual lead as the top interest payer, or does First Savings & Loan President Linda Black know something nobody else knows? Whichever. First, alone among the county's 15 financial institutions, raised the interest rate its paying on the insured money market deposit account. First, of Sea Isle City, hiked its rate from last month's 7 percent to 7.25 percent last week. By comparison, nine of the firms dropped their rates from a month ago and five stayed the same. The 91 -day U.S. Treasury Bill, which used to be the standard for these rates, but no longer is, climbed over the last month from 6.92 to 7.14. First is tied with Ocean City Home Savings, also of-
fering 7.25 percent. Last month it was paying 7.35. The next highest rate on that type account was the 7.1 percent Collective Federal is paying on its money market passbook, a different animal, but similar. The money markets, introduced in December 1982, permet six transactions a month, three of them checks. Collective s passbook has no checkwriting feature, but you can move money in and out at will. About half the institutions require a minimum $1,000 balance; the other half $2,500. The rates can change weekly, by "management decision."
