During the past summer we have had our own version of The Breakfast Club here at LCMK. The spring release of this cinema -verite look at teenage life told the story of youngsters assigned to a 1 Saturday detention with an over-bearing and boorish assistant principal These students reported early in the morning and spent the day discovering _ themselves and each other — Our version of the Breakfast Club found youngsters reporting to our weight room every weekday morning this summer, from 7:30 to 9 and working out under the supervision of two very demanding and committed teachers SINTK JULY 1. this small group of hardy youngsters come to work and sweat in preparation for fall sports programs and if they have individual successes this year, the seeds will have beerr sown in our weight room tinder the direction of Bill Porter and .John l.rnoir. they reported t almost every mornirfg. usually on their way to t work, to push and pull on i the weight machines as t Porter and Lenoir shouted i encouragement and timed s various exercise pro- I grams A special I cameraderie developed among this group whose I only qualification for f membership took the form J of our Regional physical I exam form ( NOW THAT the opening of school is close at hand. r, the pace and size of the .1 group has grown, but dur I mg those hoi July and early r
August mornings our breakfast club was an unadulterated picture of dedication. This handful of boys and girls striving to increase their strength were working out with visions of winning performances in their heads. Watching them work in those early morning sessions. I had the great urge to contact a film producer and ask him to 'write a screenplay about these kids and their teachers. NO DRUGS, no hangups, no anger, no insecurity, no anxiety, and therefore, you have no hollywood story. Where can you find teen exploitation in hard working kids and encouraging •teachers? Oh. we could spice it up with some glitzy rock-n-roll soundtrack, but seeing youngsters at work is not very romantic. It is however, very encouraging. especially to the adults who want to pass judgment on all high school kids as self-indulgent and ungrateful hedonists. H|RE ARE the members of our breakfast club. If you read their names anywhere this year remember that they have a special sense of dedication that started this ; summer at LCMK Heather Dillon, Margie Suzie Kopp. Bobby Lew C'onley.
