with Lou Rodtd Barbless Hooks Ease Removal of Catch

The Fluke regulation which calls for a 12-inch minimum for 1985 is upon us We are pleased to report that most of our fis ing associates tell us that there has been excellent compliance Most anglers understand the need for the regulation and most are complying We hope that the few who are still keeping the little ' fluke will coipe along If they do not. then we hope that enforcement will 'make lhen\ do so. Lots of salt water fish are caught on lures Hucktoils and plugs account for large numbers of weakfish. blues

and flukes We were reminded by a long-time fishing friend that if you plan to release fish when using lures, pinch off the barb and the fish will release a lot easier Vol' WON'T lose many fish with barbless hooks, but you will save a lot of fish which might be injured badly removing a hook with the -barb on it This barbless hook tip came to us from Dick Iteinart. who keeps a boat on Ot ten's Canal and fishers a lot liehind North Wildwood Dick also reminded us that this tip won't work well for the bait fishermen because

the bait comes off the barbless hooks too easily. Another good idea for the plug fishermen who troll or cast those big plugs for bluefish is to remove the front set of treble hooks and replace the rear set with a single' hook. The single hooks will work as well as the trebles IT IS A LOT easier removing a big bluefish from a lure withone hook in it than it is to get two or three treble hooks out of a fish ' It is also -risky business to handle, a big fish with all those treble hooks flopping around. We have had occasion more than Once to help get an angler and a big bluefish or striper separated when the hooks not in the fish wound up in the angler's hand. What is the salvation in times like this is a hefty pair of pliers which will cut the hook loose from the , plug." PORK RIND USE. Does pork rind help when fishing in salt water? It adds a lot of action to trolling lures such as the dark spoon It works well behind a bucktaii which is being cast to bluefish or weakfish. Short strips of pork rind also serve as a bait enhancer when fishing minnows for fluke. We find it to work as well as sguid without attracting as manyscavengers Strips of spuid or fluke belly seem to bring around big spider or calico crabs when we fluke fish in back - bays, especially as the tide starts to slow down or if we are not getting a good drift TROLL FOR FLUKE. At times, fluke in the back bays get hard to catch when the wind and tide do not allow a good drift. If your motor will idle down enough, you can troll into the tide as slowly as your boat will run Keep your baits on the bottom troll the channel edges and dropoffs

If your boat Will not troll , slow enough to accommodate fluke speeds, you can always try back trolling. This even works with bigger boats. AJ1 that back trolling meahs is that instead of trolling forward in the accepted manner, you simplyput your boat into reverse and troll backwards toward the direction you want to go. The pressure of the water on the transon will allow a much slower boat speed at engine idle. k I shim; honor ROLL: Here are some of the big fish reported to us which were caught by local anglers Adrienne ilasscl of Townsend's Inlet boated a 12'. • lb. weakfish while fishing on the Bullet with Hank ilassel in Townsend's Inlet.
