The question of whether the city should buy an emergency generator to pump well water in the event of a power failure has been settled with the acceptance of a bid of $17,750 from RC Equipment Co., Inc.. of 522 S. Broadway. Gloucester, to provide a newgenerator and heavy duty

trailer. Since the bid came in lower than expected, city officials hope to purchase another 75-watt generator to operate the water chlorination system in the event of a power outage. Council has budgeted $25,000 for the equipment, so there remains about $6,500 for the smaller generator. Although the need for an emergency power generating equipment is mandated by the state. Mayor Arthur Blomkvest and Robert Cunningham. treasurer of the Taxpayers Association, questioned how often there would be a need for it. Blomkvest acceded to the need for the generator after hearing city employes including City Electrician Conrad Briant. Cunningham abandoned his questioning and endorsed the purchase after hearing City Manager Fred Coldren tell about the need and the state mandate. Cunningham's persistent questions appeared to nettle the mayor. He pointed out that the issue had been thoroughly discussed at a work session of Council, and an agenda for the session had been sent to the Taxpayers Association. ON ANOTHER equipment front, the city is selling Margate a 1975 Allis Chalmers beach tractor for $1,500 and buying a 1978 Ford Pickup truck from Margate for $1,500. Sounds like a swap, right? Wrong. At least according to City Solicitor John Ludlam. Ludlam says swaps are a "no. no." hence the transaction will go down in posterity as a sale. THE CITY'S beach sanitizing machine, which just about everybody likes and thinks is needed, may be approaching the end of the line. In his report to Council for July, assistant superintendent of public works Jerry Inderwies. points out that the city has had to spend $9,824 to keep it running. "I regret to tell you this is the last season that it can be operated." said Inderwies of the four-year-old piece of equipment. Inderwies estimates it will cost from $50,000 to $60,000 to replace it. VANDALISM is still a problem in various parts of the city. Inderwies has informed Council. •Graffiti is the biggest problem and has to be painted over frequently." Inderwies said in his July report. Much of the vandalism is to public restrooms. Inderwies said, with mirrors being broken, sinks damaged by people sitting on them, and just general carelessness. But cooperation from the police has been good, and has helped protect public facilities from vandals. Police, including the tem-

porary summer officers, now lock the restrooms at midnight to reduce public destructiveness, Inderwies said. THREE OF THE city's portable restrooms are suffering not from vandals, but from water-induced rot.

Inderwies said the roofs on all three leak. To correct the problem, he proposes pitching the roofs for better drainage, and a different exhaust system. The good news. Inderwies said, is that "the cost of (Page 20 Please)
