Last week was not a good week for ocean bathers Many of New York's beaches were temporarily closed due to uncomfortably close sightings of sharks. Myrtle Beach. S.C.. saw its beaches overwhelmed by the black sheep of the jellyfish family. the Portuguese Man-of-War. In the Wildwoods. the City fathers were attempting to deal with a no less insidious intruder: The fecal coliform bacteria. Of the three "beach problems" it is certain that the "powers that be" would rather be dealing with sharks and jellyfish! (•RANTED. any beach/bathing problem is difficult to deal with, but at least with sharks and jellyfish one can rationalize the problem because the culprits are "doing it to us." With water pollution, we unfortunately are doing it to ourselves It is difficult to be rational With egg on your face. Fortunately, our island has the county MUA treatment facility progressing rapidly, but unfortunately hook-ups aren't slated to begin until mid- 1988 The summers of 1986. 19H7. and 1988 could pose problems for our seasonal resort economy That's a shame, because we have ushered ourselves to the breaking point with unchecked growth. deteriorating sewage infrastructure, and antiquated treatment facilities. NORTH WILDWOOD. the community with the most serious problem, has begun attempting to remedy or at least minimize the impact, but present capacity is 1 million gallons per day short of breaking even. That is a lot of sewage left marginally treated. Wildwood. North Wildwood." and Wildwood Crest have hern asked to impose a moratorium on any sewage hook-ups where dai ly use would over tax the system The moratorium would certainly curtail the off season construction in- ' dustry. but unrestricted construction and high density residential zones will only serve to exaggerate the problem IT'S A "catch 22" situation and one in which a \ politician must begin to \ question the joys of public \ service A Perhaps it's time to invh itiate some consumer 1 measures In vears past. r
I found people installing water-saving shower heads, placing bricks in toilet tanks I to reduce capacity, and in general becoming more accountable for water use. We have the same situation now. justly slightly reversed. Too much water/sewage is being "sent" from our residencies and businesses to the treatment plants. THE WILDWOODS need to expand their base of attraction. This is yet another reason for the establishment of an aquarium and/or similar major attraction in the Wildwoods. Presently, the beach is it in the Wildwoods. Close thebeaches and there is not a whole lot of reasons to vacation here. * Camden and Campbell's Soup without an aquarium still leaves Camden and Campbell soup. But Wildwood, with a closed beach and no other attraction, is a problem. My sources "up North" still insist that the establishment of the aquarium in Camden is not etched in stone IT IS STILL a discussable item and indeed should be discussed! This week, more so than any other week, in the annals of Five Mile Beach tourism should indicate just how very fragile our tourism-based economy Is It is a VERY big apple cart and it doesn't take a very big problem to upset it Perhaps it is tirhe for all businesses to unite under the banner of a single organizaton such as the (Jreater Wildwood Chamber
of Commerce which represents all businesses in all communities. Last count showed a dozen or so independent business groups, each with a bit of muscle. • Many think the time has come for one organization to be able to flex its tremendous muscle. Maybe they are right. ALSO LOOMING on the controversial horizon is the scheduled state hearing concerning the reconstruction of North Wildwood Boulevard. Slated for today and tomorrow, the hearings at Middle Township Elementary School will pit pro reconstruction advocates against Grassy Sound residents in an attempt to sway the state to their respective side. Alternate C, which has the support of both Middle Township and North Wildwood officials, would claim some 37 acres of wetlands and force 137 households to condemnation proceedings and the subsequent purchase of the homes by the state. Alternate A would claim fewer homes (32) but would encroach upon 46 acres of wetlands. There is a third alternative. The. state may choose to do nothing. It has usually opted to pursue this approach aggressively, but community sentiments would indicate that this lack of action will not sit well this year. The bets are on that something will be done As stated before, this is not a North Wildwood issue. It is i Page 29 Please)
