Golden Days Ahead For Cape Fishing
COURT HOUSE - With the back to school movement under way. anglers fishing the water in and around Cape May County are sharpening their hooks in preparation for the 60 Golden Days of Autumn. This is the period from mid-september through mid-November, when ideal weather, a slowdown in the hectic seashore pace and an upswing in the fishing activity all make for an ideal time to visit the Jersey Cape. With cooler weather, fishing activity changes. Inland waterway fishing produces weakfish, bluefish, seabass fluke and kingfish. Crabbing is also good in October as the crabs fatten up before burrowing in the mud for the winter. AS THE temperature drops in the back bays, there is an outpouring of bait from the bays out the inlets and into the ocean. . Many small fish also leave the bays to head for warmer water. Bigger fish lie in wait for this bait outpouring and the surf and waters adjacent to the inlets start to produce bigger bluefish. weakfish and kingfish. Weakfish moving south along the beaches school up within a mile or two of the beach and provide excellent action on small metal jigs, bucktails or bait. Bluefish. too. are more active close to the beaches and can be jigged or caught with bait as well Wreck fishermen also see an upswing in their catches. Sea bass, porgies. ling and blackfish are numbered in mixed bag fishing, along the beginning catches of cod or pollock. THE CAPE MAY County party and charter boat fleet remains ready to sail through the Golden Days of Autumn. Some of the boat
fi liveries remain open, as do bait and tackle shops, s Motels offer post-season i reduced rates and the husf tie and bustle of the hectic s summer season is behind ) the resident and visitig fishermen alike. There is l lots of rail^pace on boats, l and restaurants and other I places of business are less i crowded. I There is also less activity ! around the area's many i boat ramps and marinas. ; Fish are found much closer to shore. This makes for ideal fishing for the angler who trailers his own rig. While much of the fall fishing is done with bait, the Golden Days of Autumn offer an opportunity to fish with lures. Bucktails, plugs and metal jigs work well. THE CAPE MAY COUNTY'S 50th Anniversary Fishing Tournament runs through Dec. 31. Anglers entering fish in the tournament receive a special Golden Anniversary commemorative badge and citation. Fish passing minimum weights are recognized with a bronze award and a Golden Anniversary award citation. There is no entry fee or advance registration. Anglers may enter the contest by taking their fish to any one of the more than 80 official weigh stations to be registered and weighed in. Fishing tackle prizes are awarded in over 30 categories of fish caught on rod and reel on Jersey Cape waters For information on the 1985 anniversary contest write: Fishing Tournament.
