Aces Top All-Star LL Team
STONE HARBOR - For the second consecutive year the champions have upset the All Stars in the annual champion-all-star exhibition in the Lions Club Little League. This year's champions, the Aces, used strong defense and fine pitching by MVP Steve Wander to defeat the AllStars in a convincing manner, 5-1. The Aces jumped to an early lead in the top of the first inning as they have done all season long when Chris Stairett walked and scored on Scott Juenger's
home run down the first base line. THIS GAVE Wunder all the cushion he needed as he finessed and overpowered the All-Stars with the help of great defensive play in 83-Pound Cobia May Set Record CAPE MAY - An 83-Ib. cobia caught Aug. 20 by a Cape May angler may qualify as a new State of New Jersey record. The paperwork to certify the fish as a state record is being processed by representatives of the South Jersey Marina where the fish was weighed in, and by the charter captain on whose boat the fish was caught. The cobia was taken on a four-ounce bucktail at the 20 fathom curve off Cape May by Mark McDevitt, of Cape May. He was aboard on a fishing trip for sharks on the Huntress, a charter boat skippered by Dan Guss. out of South Jersey Marina. ACCORDING TO Capt. Guss, the cobia, accompanied by three smaller ones, entered their shark chum slick. The fish ignored the bluefish filets offered them, so Guss rigged a rod for McDevitt with the big bucktail he had made himself. Guss had caught cobia while fishing in Florida. The new possible state record eclipses the previous record set in Delaware Bay by Eli P. Ilitchner in 1972. That fish weighed 45 lb. 2 oz. The party also caught five dolphin and lost a shark on the charter trip to the 20 fathom line The dolphin were caught on ounce bucktails cast to them when they came into the chum slick. The cobia was also entered into the Cape May County Fishing Tournament rare fish division and will be considered for a prize in that contest in January
the infield. An inning ending 1-6-3 double play thwarted a potential big inning for the All-Stars in the first and provided the needed boost for the underdog Aces. Champion coaches Scott Krouse and F.P. Dailey faced a serious problem when Wunder became tired and was forced to leave the mound. John Simpson was called in to relieve and kept a 2-1 lead going into the top of the sixth inning. A one-out single and an RBI double coupled with numerous fielding errors by the All Stars producedthree runs in the sixth that virtually sealed the win for champions. Simpson needed just four pitches in the bottom of the inning to record the save for the champs.
