AVALON — The seventh week of the borough's Recreation Summer Surfing Contest saw over 40 participants in surfboard, boogie board and knee board competition. This event is for an accumulation of points toward final Clamshell Pitching Contest CAPE MAY - One of the area's most unusual sporting events occurs Saturday and Sunday here. This year, as for the past 39. the International Clamshell Pitching Club of Cape May will hold its open championships sponsored by the City of Cape May. Commencing at 10 a.m. on Sieger's Beach, the competition will be held in Men's and Women's Singles. Doubles, and Mixed Doubles. TIIK GAME itself is a combination of quoits and horseshoes. Two holes are dug in the hard sand and, at a distance of 25 feet 6 inches contestants try to toss their shells into or near the hole. Scoring is as in horseshoes, except that "toppers" cancel out. Club President Richard Reinhart notes that the game is not to be confused with the professionalism of horseshoes. Whereas the recent championships produced a ringer percentage of 93.7 per cent, Reinhart says that on a good day a firstrate clamshell pitcher might hit 40 per cent. Trophies are awarded to all winners. For information contact the Cape May Civic Affairs Department 884-8411, ext. 20 or 27.
