Varicose veins are our next topic in discussing cir- * culatory diseases. In most people they are annoying from a cosmetic point of view. However, millions do suffer a feeling of fatigue, heaviness and aching in their legs. This stems from the bulging, bluish lines that indicate varicose veins. Even worse, sometimes the ankles may swell and pain extends down the leg along the vein. Scaly, itchy skin may develop over the area. Deep leg cramps at night, phlebitis, clots and leg ulcers can also result. THERE IS NOT much agreement in the medical community as to what causes varicose veins. We do know some important facts: They are uncommon in countries with high fiber diets; They are often found in families; they are aggravated by standing or sitting in one place for too long, use of tight knee-high boots, garters, girdles, panty hose and crossed legs while sitting. They often appear during pregnancy but generally recede after delivery. WHAT EXACTLY are varicose veins? A vein, compared to an artery, is relatively thin. Its job is to carry used blood back to the heart and then to the lungs to get fresh oxygen. Veins are a one-way street leading to the heart and have littlp one-way valves inside to prevent back flow. Normally, each valve opens to let the blood through when the pressure builds to the proper point.
For unknown reasons, (although the facts above give us some good clues) sometimes the pressure on the leg veins interferes with the flow of blood and the vein becomes stretched. This injures the valves, they fail to close properly and blood backs up and stretches the veins farther. PREVENTION isn't always possible, but there are some simple actions which may help. First, keep your weight down, eat lots of fiber, don't spend any extra time on the toilet (move your library to another room), avoid standing still in one spot, or if you must, wriggle your toes. Periodically rise up and down on your toes while on the job and start legstrengthening sports such as jogging, cycling, swimming or walking. Consider support hose during pregnanacy and lenghty standing. When sitting leave your legs uncrossed, put your feet up whenever possible and avoid binding garments. AVAILABLE treatments are straightforward and somewhat limited. Prescription elastic stockings are usually the first choice. Surgery can be helpful in removing troubling symptoms, but is not totally without risk, so cosmetic consideration should be carefully weighed. , In some cases injection of a sclerosing solution to seal off the vein can result in a cessation of symptoms and sometimes even cosmetic improvement.

Joyride III jk - By Libby Demp Forrest J "If the alligator comes out, I'm going to chop off his head," said No. 2 as we started to look for school clothes. \Ve are not what you'd call a preppy family, but my idea of school clothes and No. 2's ideas are like night and day While I stopped to look at a long-sleeved polo shirt, No. 2 wandered off to look at surfing clothes While I looked at corduroy jeans. No. 2 wandered off to look at a pair of pants that tied with a drawstring "WHY DO PANTS need pockets way down there0" I asked No. 2 "You don't really keep things in the pockets." said No. 2. "You wear the pockets." "Wear the pockets?" I said. "I never heard of such a thing. Pockets are for keeping things in " "You're old-fashioned." said No. 2. I looked at the long-sleeved polo shirt again, and No. 2 repeated. "If the alligator comes out, I'm going to chop off his head." "WOULDN'T IT BE NICE to have a nice long-sleeved polo." I said, "for winter days?" "You act like we live in Alaska." said No. 2. No. 2 pulled a short sleeved shirt from a rack. "You act like we live in Tahiti." I said. "I like this shirt," said No. 2 I looked at the .price tag. "I don't like it," I said. "Why?" asked No. 2. "WE CAN BUY two shirLs for what that one shirt costs." I said. No. 2 put the shirt back on the rack. He pulled out another shirt that looked like something a grandfather would wear. "I like this." said No. 2. "I'm not going to pay good money for something that looks like somebody wore it out first." I said. "Everybody is wearing these," No. 2 said. "I'LL TELL YOU what. You buy it with your money. You saved some money this summer." I said. "I don't like it that much to use my own money." said No. 2. I went back to the long-sleeved polo shirt. No. 2 watched me. "You tell the alligator I'll make alligator shoes out of him if he bothers me." said No* 2.
