The most talked about jazz musician today is a young guitarist by the name of Stanley Jordan. His revolutionary style of playing has. on his new Blue Note album, not only shaken up the jazz world, but it's made inroads into the pop scene. What makes Jordan so unusual is that he doesn't pick the strings. Instead he hammers them with his fingers, not unlike a pianist striking the keys. This, coupled with the unorthodox tuning, gives Jordan his technique, but his true success comes from his warm, melodic solos. THE MATERIAL is a compelling blend of originals and tunes composed by Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis. Thad Jones. Thelonious Monk and Lennon and McCartney. Jordan is truly one of the most dynamic jazz performers to emerge in recent years. Jorma Kaukonen has left his mark on rock history, first as the lead guitarist in the Jefferson Airplane and later with Hot Tuna. Not content to rest on his laurels, Kaukonen continues to perform solo and those who cherish ■ good finger-style acoustic guitar playing owe it to themselves to order his lastest, Magic (Relix, P.O. Box 92. Brooklyn, N Y 11229) CUT LIVE in front of an audience of his faithful. Kaukonen's country-blues picking is spellbinding Although not a great vocalist. Kaukonen makes up for his limitations.with a relaxed, friendly delivery that makes each track a success. Van Morrison has left behind some amazing records, hut as a live per former his reputation is. to say the least, spotty Known for Ix'ing either brilliant or a total shambles onstage. Mor

rison stays on the edge. I resulting in his fans' never I knowing quit what to expect from this seasoned | veteran. THIS IS earthy, pas- V sionate R&B-based rock I that neatly uses Morrison's h eccentricities to enhance. c rather than detract from. . the performances. The Gary Burton 1 Quartet's Real Life Hits P (ECM) is another strong ■ effort from the jazz vibist.
