From The Principal }By Stanley Kotzen Principal, Lower Cape May Regional High School

Our spring housecleaning is completed, but in a high school. The work is done during July and August. When we opened the doors to our students today. the halls were shining, the windows were sparkling. and there was the fading odor of fresh paint lingering in the air. Floors had been stripped and polished desks refinished. ceiling tiles replaced, and generally the building had been scoured in preparation for the start of a new school year. Within an hour of the opening bell, more than 1100 people have a very special way of redirecting

one's focus, and ail of the hard work at making our building cleaner and neater gets lost in the excitement of first day of school. HARDLY ANYBODY takes the time to say thanks to the custodial and maintenance staff. All too often staffers hear only griping and grousing and sadly, they get used to that fact. So here's a little public acknowledgment for their efforts. Headed by Donna Kippei. our supervisor of buildings and grounds, this group goes about its daily rounds in the summer heat and humidity trying to meet the demands of repair and replacement that arise

from a very full 10-month school calendar. Often the work is not much more than the routine drudgery of an old fashioned "G.I. Party", but it is work that must be done if the building is to be ready again in September Area by area, the crewworks its way around the building painting up. fixing up and cleaning up in a team effort members know will probably go unrecognized and most certainly taken for granted by those who benefit most from their labor. WHEN ANY public building is cared for in a special way it is invariably because of the pride that the custodial staff takes in its work. We are going to make a special effort at LCMR this year to spread that pride in our facility by recognizing our custodial personnel and assisting them in their attempts to keep this building especially presentable. If a school represents the investment of its community. its maintenance and appearance are the most obvious statement of that school's pride in its accomplishments. When ' youngsters spend one third of their lives every 10 months in this building we expect them to care for it as if it is. partially at least, their room at home. (Maybe that's why their lockers are such a mess sometimes! ) THIS IS our crew of maintenance personnel who do such a fine job for us: Nick Beamon. Dorin Caza, Stephen Golaszewski. Norman Goodrow, and John O'Donnell. Along with these men are: Gene Bieniecki. John Browning-Jack Keevil, Lonnie Matthews. Juan Santiago. Frank Young and Jim Wood. John Krukosky and Jeff Matthews make up our outside crew, and are responsible for cutting and lining all of our athletic fields. For Donna Rippel and her staff from all of us at LCMR. thanks for a job well done. We will try to make their job more manageable by taking more pride in the appearance of our building.
