Crowds Leave; Sewage Problems Diminish *

CREST HAVEN - No one was happier to see Labor Day than county Health Officer Louis J. La manna. "When the crowds go, the volume in the sewage plants nosedives," he said Friday, "and we'll have no more overcapacity problems." Those "overcapacity problems" polluted the ocean and forced Lamanna to close the Five-Mile Island (North Wildwood, Wildwood, Wildwood Crest and Lower Township) beaches on Aug. 22. They were reopened about 4 p.m. last Wednesday, Aug. 28. Fecal coliform bacteria counts of higher than 2,400 MPN (Most Probable Number) were responsible for closing the beaches. > Three consecutive days (Aug. 25, 26 and 27 with a day required to get lab results) of less than 50 MPN > (the state water quality i maximum) made it possible to reopen. In the interim, Lamanna said, the Health Department worked about 200 hours, i The Wildwoods' backi bays, incidentally, remain I closed. That's where the sewage treatment plant outI fall lines discharge and the i bacteria counts are consistently high. The ocean crisis is believed to have resulted from the North Wildwood plant's discharge into Herefore Inlet, which i flowed south, "hugging" the shore and the Wildwood beaches. "This is true all over the county." observed Lamanna last. Friday. "Sewage treatment plants have not kept pace with building." The state stepped in last week to deal with that by issuing stop-work orders on construction and prohibiting all new sewer connections in the Wildwoods. The answer apparently lies with the Municipal Utilities Authority's regional sewage treatment plant expected by the summer of 1988. A large jar of nuts sat on Lamanna's desk, gift of staff members in commemoration of the "nutsy" week they'd had. Because of the ocean waters crisis, the department gave priority to testing them and "we had to deviate from our normal runs," he said, which are the basis of the Water Monitoring Program chart that normally appears in this newspaper.

Thus, no chart. It will reappear next week, and throughout September as the department continues to check the waters.
