fufl K PENCE BUILDERS — Upper Township Beach Patrol members Scott Collins. Lt. Joseph Callahan and Jim Strader install snow fencing along Strathmere beach front. Lifeguards Double As Dune Builders STRATHMERE — Protecting the beaches is the normal job of beach patrols along the coast, and that usually entails guarding the swimmers. In Strathmere, members of The Upper Township Beach Patrol carry the protection of the beaches on step further, by protecting the beaches through a long-term snow fence installation program. "We started this project back in 1978." Upper Township Beach Inspector Dick Alliger stated, "when a small section of fencing was installed. This year, our project has grown to the point where Upper Township Beach Patrol members have installed over 10 blocks of the dune building fencing." TIIE IDEA of the snow fencing along the beach front is to catch blowing sand, which in turn forms a dune, thus helping protect the community from storms. "We leave paths at each street end." Alliger stated, "but a small area parallel to the beach is blocked off. This allows vegitation to grow, which also helps trap blowing sand. Most of the fencing we have installed in past years is now nearly all covered with sand and has formed large sections of protective dunes". This year's UTBP fencing program has been the most ambitious ever taken, covering the area from Winthrop Road at the north end of the island to Randolph Road at the south, an area of a little over 10 blocks. Lt Joseph Callahan has been in charge of the 1985 project. "LT. CALLAHAN and his volunteer guards have done a truly amazing job." Alliger said. "The project is done during off-peak' hours and on slow beach days, thus the swimmers are always protected." The funds for the project have come from Upper Township's beach protection fund, as established by the township committee, and expenses for this year for fencing and poles haye amounted to about $1,000. "This is a very small amount of money to help build 10 blocks of dunes," Alliger said, "when you consider the thousands or millions of dollars needed to pump in sand to protect and restore our beaches." "OUR PROJECT is also in line with the state's theory of natural beach protection'", Alliger noted. "Avalon may still have the highest dunes on the Cape." Alliger said, "but with the continued interest and support of the township committee and the dedicated interest of the members of The Upper Township Beach Patrol. Strathmere may rival them in the future."
