Farm Agent wide trend, to have a lesser amount of farms, but ones that are left are bigger. The development pressure has been tremendous, expecially in Upper Township, with the casino nearby," he said. Tourism has cut into farm acreage. Developers favored building on farm plots, since they were already cleared of trees, MacLeod said. ACCORDING TO MACLEOD the Garden State Parkway has also hurt the county agricultural industry. Built on a ridge over some of the best topsoil in the area, the parkway also split several farms. Since plodding farm machinery couldn't keep up with the speedway pace of auto traffic, farmers let their fields on the east side of the parkway go unattended, MacLeod said. As a member of the county Planning Board for 25 years, MacLeod brings a rural viewpoint to a board often asked to think in developer's terms. As the county's population continues *to grow, MacLeod said he hopes that planners leave room for agriculture. HE PREDICTED that as more people compete for resources, farmers will have to make the most of what they've got. In Israel, where water is scarce, peach farmers use a method of irrigation that waters only the immediate dirt around the tree and lets the surrounding area go dry. Although this area hardly approaches the MidI die East, MacLeod sug-
gested that farmers must use a variety of techniques to/get the most from their resources. 'Making the most of his resources, MacLeod is proud of the 200 bushels of animal feed corn he averaged per acre on his farm, exceeding the 130-bushel county norm. He was more excited to point out that growers in the 1700s averaged about 15 bushels, and that the average increased little until the 1940s. MACLEOD DIDN'T HAVE MUCH TIME to contribute to that wartime spurt, since he was in the Navy at the time. Born in Gloucester County, MacLeod had his schooling interrupted when he joined the service during World War II. He finished at Lincoln High School in Philadelphia, and rather than wait for an opening at Rutgers, which had a backlog of returning veterans, MacLeod opted to attend New Mexico State. "I was married, and had a child, and I was serious about getting started, getting on with things," he said. He planned to transfer to Rutgers after a year at New Mexico State, but ended up receiving his diploma from 'the western university. After graduation, MacLeod worked for two dairy companies and the Grange League Federation cooperative, now known as the agway {arm-supply chain. He took the post of j
county agricultural agent in July 1958. On his 12 acres in Belleplain, MacLeod, who in his early 60's, plans to experiment with new techniques and crop varities. He and his wife Libby shouldn't lack visitors; they have three children, plus four from her previous marriage. All reside in the area, and there are 16 grandchildren for the MacLeods to entertain. "I'll tell you, we eat a lot of birthday cake and ice cream," he joked. While some people dream of retiring to Florida or some other sunny climate, MacLeod said he is quite happy to spend his golden years here. "I don't know of any other place in the world that's better," he said.
