J Wetlands Festival To Spotlight Dogs

STONE HARBOR - Retriever in-the-water demonstrations will again be a feature of the New Jersey Wings 'n Water Festival Sept. 21 and 22. This two-day event celebrates the many natural coastal attractions of Cape May County, such as duck hunting and water recreation. A world class decorative bird carving show, decoy and wildlife art and photography shows are some of the other attractions planned. THE RETRIEVER demonstration will feature Chipper, a 4-year-old Chesapeake Bay retriever, and .Cody, a 10-year-old Golden retriever Their owners. Bob and Dee Bailey of Woodbine, will show the dog's hunting form m mini trials conducted from the salt marsh to the tidal creek directly behind the Wetlands Institute. headquarters of the festival. Chipper has her Working Dog Certificate and Com panion Dog Certificate, while Cody also holds a Working Dog Certificate, is a field trial and companion dog. and will simulate a working situation. THE POPULAR Chesapeake breed was developed in Maryland and is the only type of retriever that is American. Golden retrievers were first registered in 1925 in the United States and originated in England. They are trained to stay in a boat or blind in cold

weather and can withstand many cold hours in the water. With heavier bones and thicker coat, the Golden is the most recent breed of retrievers among the five kinds existing in the world today. THE RETRIEVER demonstrations will be held at 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday during the Festival. A benefit for the Wetlands Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to research and education programs dealing with the coastal environment. the festival is partially supported by a state grant to help promote "NJ and YOU - Perfect Together the state slogan. The Wetlands Institute is open daily Tuesday through Saturday. 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
