At night we all hear the songs of thousands of crickets at this time of the year. If fleas made noise, we, as well as our pets, would not have much peace and quiet. The flea season is at its peak now and judging from the populations of fleas seen on our animals this month, the fleas are winning the battle for control of your pets. Some readers may have noticed my article on fleas several months ago. Considering how bad the flea population has been in the past month . some reminders of flea control are necessary HOW TO control fleas is also the most frequently posed question to your veterinarian at this time of the year. The first thing to remember is that if you see fleas on your animals and these pets are allowed in the house, your house has fleas, flea eggs and flea larvae in it. Many pet owners do not realize that fact. You will not see the fleas your house unless the flea population is high. Adult fleas choose to hop on | cats and dogs before i humans. | IF NO pet host is readily i available, humans will be : Also, if there are too fleas present and too i pets available for the < fleas to bite, humans will I again be victimized. I Fleas lay eggs in unseen I

3 parts of your household and a A. no vacuum cleaner does ( fr the job that insecticides M will. You must bomb, spray I 1 or exterminate your house 1 I properly and frequently at r 1 this time of the year to keep a i] on top of flea infestation. I The only reasons for not doing so would be human health problems or the presence of delicate animals such as birds or fish. In these cases, area spraying with stringent precautions is probably the only viable option. SPRAYING VOI R yard with insecticides may help . lower the flea population » but probably will not get all . the fleas. Contact a retail | insecticide outlet or exter1 minator for suggestions on ! what to use around the yard if you are interested ! in working on this part of . the problem When the population of ■ fleas is at its peak, you must spray, dip. powder, as often as possible, every pet member of your house- " hold. Frequency of insecticide use is most important, followed closely by the strength and quality of the products involved. THE BEST flea control products are found at your veterinarian's office, some pet stores, feed and farm stores, and other reputable retail outlets Try to avoid the temptation to buy the convenient nationally-advertised pro- . ducts at supermarkets and discount stores They don't make much of a dent in flea numbers because of their j diluted strength and lack of effective ingredients THE L'SE of a flea collar does not replace the job of . frequent treatment of the I | entire animal, especially

the tailbase area. This is the part of your pet's body which is most likely to be bitten by fleas. Many people are asking their veterinarian about the efficacy of organic or natural flea control. Most recently, a product called LYFE* has appeared. In almost all cases, when an organic flea "cure" is finally tested in a controlled university study, the results are not supportive of the manufacturer's claims. ORGANIC products are not considered drugs and usually do not need approval and testing before manufacture and marketing. y For the most pArt, these products will notjhurt your pet. but they propably will not repel fleas and almost certainly will n« kill the fleas. Some natural products are thought by consumers to (be better because of heavy advertising or sophisticated marketing. / The decision of what to spend money on to control fleas remains with the consumer. Money spent on unproven and sometimes totally ineffective natural products may better be spent on more effective solutions. ELECTRONIC devices help repel fleas, but again, they will not them. Displacement of to another area of the using electronic gear will not alleviate flea bites your pet The new electronic colfor your pets seem to a minimal ability to repel fleas and definitely will not keep fleas from

; reproducing in your house. STARTING a dog on the i oral insecticide PROBANat this time also will not stop the flea problem quickly. It takes a few weeks to achieve blood levels of the drug sufficient to kill biting fleas. A flea-infested house will not become flea-free through the use of PROBAN only. House control and moderate topical control of the animals will be necessary. One final note to summer residents who close up their houses for the winter after a few enjoyable Indian Summer weekends. It is a very good idea to bomb two or three times in the fall, with one fogging scheduled for the time you intend to shut down for the winter. By using bombs (full release aerosol containers) which are larvacidal, you will cut your flea infestation next year and rid the house for the winter of pests such as crickets and silverfish as well. Staff Picnic RIO GRANDE - A joint staff picnic will be held by Cape Human Resources. Inc., and Atlantic Human Resources 10 a.m. -5 p.m. Friday. Sept. 20, at the County Park in Swainton. Participants will provide their specialtiest for a "pot luck"' lunch. All staff members and Foster Grandparents are invited For further information. call 729-4902.
